After school dance club?

DD (14) wants to start after school dance club when term starts. She has never shown an interest before but I don't want to put her off.

Kit letter received at end of term says PE kit or loose clothes and "dance shoes or bare feet" - there's the rub! Dance shoes are expensive so my proposal was bare feet - what does everyone think? Don't want to spend a load of money if she is not going to stick it but don't want her to stand out from the crowd?

Depends on the type of dance it is, if it's contemporary bare feet will be fine - Jazz, Tap & Ballet need proper shoes, although some Jazz/Modern will be bare feet too

Commercial/street/hiphop will need well fitting supportive trainers

Jazz shoes start at about £12 but aren't really necessary unless the floor is poor

I'm assuming that the either or bit means she can go for both but obviously she is keen on the dance shoes - I'm tempted just to tell her no, I think bare feet are fine.

Try it in bare feet then she can see what others wear. Basic jazz shoes (which are light and flexible for most generic dance classes) cost between £10-15. Dance direct and eBay are good places to look.

Agree with Katy. My guess is it will be contemporary/modern based so bare feet is the convention but anything high impact like street dance should be trainers but it's common/understandable for teachers to not want students dancing in outdoor street shoes.

Some children may have jazz or ballet shoes already & may prefer to wear them. You can get basic ones for around £10-15

I think part of the problem is she is not keen on going barefoot - it's a teen thing I think, I remember I was not that keen on it when I was at school and doing dance/gym etc

What about foot undees then?

Report
balletgirlmum · 27/12/2015 19:51

What size is she?

Report
robinsamy · 27/12/2015 19:52

She is size 4 or 5 - what are foot undees?

like these - DD hates them

Foot undees are yet another thing for my dd to lose!

Seriously they are flesh coloured foot coverings for dance ususlly modern or contemporary.

Oh they look painful!! Katy does your DD prefer to dance barefoot or in shoes?

For dd it depends on the style of dance.

For contemporary/Jazz/Modern barefoot - but her feet are hardy - she can even try Ballet on grass barefoot!

It really depends on your flooring - tiles/lino on concrete & she'd be better with a shoe

But both balletgirlmum & my DD wear pointe shoes so they know pain Wink

She would probably be better barefoot at least initially

I think I will tell her bare feet - we used to do dance in PE in bare feet so if it was good enough for me it is good enough for her!!

Do your daughters get to wear their dance shoes when they do dance in pe?

Turns are easier in shoes but I cant imagine a beginner dance club doing jazz pirouettes or chaine turns.

Also is the floor a dedicated dance/gym space? Bare feet on a school hall floor is a bit yukky.

Report
balletgirlmum · 27/12/2015 20:07

Dd doesn't do PE.

robinsamy · 27/12/2015 20:08

The hall I assume! Why is it yucky?

It's yukkybof people have walked across IT in outdoor shoes/dropped food/etc etc.

The studios dd dances in no outdoor shoes are allowed and strictly no food or drink excrpt a bottle of water.
