DS is 8 and is doing Stepen Hellers's Etude. I have no knowledge of music, but from various mumsnet posts I realised it will be helpful if DS knows about some background info about the composer and the piece. I know such info cam be found from Wikipedia, but DS is not that into Wikipedia as it is mainly text in black and white. I wonder if anyone can recommend a good book (ideally fun words with pictures) about famous composers that are suitable for kids to read? - DS likes reading and can read slightly above his age.

If you can find/order them, there's a series called "Getting to know the world's greatest composers" that is designed for children about that age. I haven't used them myself and literally googled stuff and then looked it up on Amazon, but they look about right for the age group. If your son is a good reader then he will find them an easy read.

Slightly harder reads are the "Introducing" series. www.amazon.com/gp/product/0382396340?ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0382396340&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

You could also try the audio (e-books linked) here on librivox: librivox.org/stories-of-great-composers-for-children-by-thomas-tapper/

However, they mainly deal with the uber famous people - Mozart, Beethoven etc.

Why Beethoven Threw The Stew is a good one! About several composers. It's by Stephen Isserlis.
