She just needs to do her best and also demonstrate a good, willing to learn attitude. They are very good at assessing potentil so those who have not had lots of training need not be at a disadvantage if they can see potential.

A couple of people I know go to the Birmingham & Manchester ones.

Plenty of people audition some get in some don't . They do a lot of contemporary so that stylke isn;t for everyone. There are limited places so it is no reflection if she doesn;t get in.

The audition process is often in the form of a class and can be a good experience in itself. I know that at the Birmingham ones there were then recalls.

How did your dd's CAT audition go KatyMac? When will you hear?

Did she find some intensive ballet classes/private lessons over the summer?

It was tonight, we just got home; she got a trial

She got 2 private lessons and the teacher says she would be fine in the grade 5 class if she knew the steps so she has to do grade 3 to start with to learn the basics plus a few privets to get up to speed.

Now we just need to decide if she wants it

Well done to your dd. that's brilliant.

The NAPMer who posted about it also posts on ballet.co.uk, doing dance section (under the other name she puts on her NAPM postings). She might be able to advise if you're not sure, or there may be some other posters on the ballet site who know the CAT scheme your dd would be doing. I know it is a huge commitment in terms of hours the young people put it (and I guess you have to get your dd to the CAT classes on top of her home ones - so a big commitment for you as well!

They want her to stop doing ballroom & latin comps and I'm not sure she is ready to do that

Mon 7:15-8:15 (termtime) & 7:15-8:45 (termtime) alternate weeks Ballet
Tues 5:00-6:00 then 6:30-8:30 (termtime) Arts Award / Ballet & Modern
Wed 5:00-6:00 then 6:00-7:15 (termtime) Glee/theatre
Thurs 7:30-8:30 Drumming
Fri 5:15-6:00 (fortnightly) then 8:00-11:00 The other week B&L
Sat 10:00-11:00 (all year) then 1:00-6:00 (termtime) B&L/Ballet & Modern
Sun All day about once every 2 months or so B&L comps

Plus an average of 5.5 hrs dance a week in school Modern

That is a lot, but remember that the idea of CATs schemes is to allow young people living at home to keep up with those who are at vocational training schools on dance places, where they might be getting 20 hours a week dance training. It means that they stand a chance of competing with the vocational school trained children for the places at 16 or 18 at dance schools sixth forms/dance colleges. And it does work. They can get to those schools/colleges.

My ds was a Royal Ballet School Junior Associate for a year and was doing 8 hours a week of dance aged 8, and dropped out! He just does 5 hours of dance a week now, but does 5 hours of music lessons, singing, Band, Orchestra etc, and another hour drama, plus an associate scheme at one of the performing arts schools, plus holiday workshops/English Youth Ballet etc. Other Junior Associate boys were doing up to 15 hours of dance a week - aged 8! I guess they're the ones at the Royal Ballet School now!

Would love to see your dd's Latin/Ballroom. I think if there were any classes in it for youngsters around here my ds would let them takeover his life! He is obsessed by Strictly. Roll on tonight!

North West England - waiting the gales, so I don't think we'll be travelling anywhere tomorrow. Just hoping we can make it to dd and ds ballet classes on Monday and that we're not flooded in! Wouldn't mind being flooded in after that - Tuesday and Wednesday at work promise to be tough.....
