Advice/programme for 15yo starting weights

Hi, my 15yo DS has bought some dumbbells and wants to start building strength/toning up. He's very unsporty, a little overweight, and wants to get a bit fitter (well, actually, he says 'look better', he's become a bit self conscious). He has no clue where to start. Neither have I. Can anyone recommend a programme, or a YouTube tutorial etc, that would help him get startled? (He's also starting other exercise too, he's not only going to use dumbbells.)

Weights are great for fat loss, so well done to your ds for starting something like that.

He could try a boot camp style programme. Fitness Blender are great for that sort of thing, just to get him started and see results quickly. It's amazing how much the motivation increases when you see changes.

Thanks sexisaprotectedcharacyeristic. I've just gone on to their website and there is a beginner programme for dumbbells but it's $15 to download and I'm reluctant to pay unless I know it's right for DS. Are all their programmes paid for items?

I would seriously consider investing in a couple of PT sessions. I did this for my son (14) as I knew there was no way he'd listen to anything I said and was worried about him injuring himself or getting bored after the first week! He did 2 consecutive weeks with the PT then 2 more sessions but alternate weeks (so total 6 weeks) and he wrote him a programme to do at home and adjusted as he went along. They weren't cheap at £30 a session but it got him hooked and cheaper than our leisure centre junior membership at £35pm!

A lot od gyms do not allow under 17 yr olds to do weight training as it can cause damage to young bodies. Take professional advice

Thanks houseyhousey** that is a great idea- I will investigate.

nomorepolitics yep I think 15 is okay though, from what I've researched, as long as they don't start trying to lift crazy weights (I don't think there's any risk of that happening!)

Sounds like a good idea. Sounds like my son is in a similar situation to yours. He's 15 and overweight but really wanted to get active a few months ago. He found a guy on YouTube called Tom Merrick. We've been looking at a gym membership, now he's shown his commitment and hopefully he'll be able to shed some pounds and gain some muscle and confidence. Hope this helps.

I second Tom Merrick, he's excellent and I'd say a good role model for young men in how to approach working out, he specialises in bodyweight work.

For technique, direct him towards Jeff Cavaliere at ATHLEAN-X™. He is a real expert in fitness, not one of the many hundreds of 'youtube' experts.

Thanks hidinginwales will check Jeff Cavaliere out!
