Anyone else injured at the moment?(25 Posts)
I’ve managed to pick up a really nasty calf strain; I hobbled on it for a week and stupidly ignored it, ran on it and now I’ll be off running for a few weeks.
I know this is minor in the general state of things ( a couple of my friends have really nasty ongoing hip and knee issues). But I’ve just really got into running and I am so frustrated!
Does anyone want to join me sitting out on the bench?
Me! Self diagnosed plantar fasciitis but not sure if it’s even that. Heel pain that occasionally runs along the bottom of my foot. Started after I got over excited towards the end of a half marathon in July. Ran way faster than normal for the last two miles to get a PB and now I have this niggling injury that I daren’t ignore —too much— So I barely ran until a few weeks ago when I had a triathlon to do (booked in for months and really didn’t want to miss). 5km run in the tri went ok and heel hasn’t been too terrible but I can still feel it even when walking any distance. I’m doing the classic ‘ignore for several months before actually having it assessed’ thing. Denial I think it’s called!
And yes I too am finding not running so frustrating!
My husband and I go hiking every weekend, and last weekend I twisted my ankle, which has given me problems since I was a teen and injured it a few times doing sports. It's not a bad sprain, but it has prevented me from my daily walks and hiking this weekend. Very, very annoying. I hope you're up and running soon!
Yes, im waiting for physio. My appointment isn't until November . Pain is worse during the night when I turn over and it wakes me up. Hence my post.
Sorry to hear of others injuries, but at least we are not alone!
I think denial is so tempting. I’m also not that experienced so was pretty poor at judging when to stop.
I had a sports massage on my leg. I ended up yelping like a sea lion it was so painful!
So I’m stretching, and reading Woman’s Running, and looking longingly at the new high viz top I had just bought.
Going to try Pilates today and a very very short cycle.
Yes, it's so frustrating. Weights are my thing and I've had a frozen shoulder for 18 months, it's just getting back to normal and I now have a rotator cuff injury in my other shoulder which rules out loads of exercise.
Yes! I'm feeling sorry for myself so went to look at the exercise board and this was the first thread to pop up. I have a grade 2 ankle sprain, partially torn two ligaments. My foot in swollen, black and blue and I am grumpy. Rehab looks like six weeks under the guidance of a physio, not sure when can start exercising again. Was starting to make progress with my fitness and feel it all going to shit. What rehab is everyone doing?
Urgh. So many crappy injuries to collect! Rotator cuff is a shocker winsome 🙁
I am continuing to cycle (weather permitting) and swim. But this time of year is when I’d usually be knocking those off a bit and just plodding out for a run. Running requires so much less motivation to get out and do so I’m really missing it.
I also do a regular yoga class which really helps with general injury prevention. But calf stretches and massaging my foot with a golf ball (yes really!) is all I’m doing at the moment.
I've been rehabbing a rotator cuff injury for ages but was told by three physios I could do most things as long as pain-free, and build up slowly. Weights are my thing too, so when it was at its worst I did high reps low weights and really focussed on form and posture. The only thing that made it worse was a fall when I flung my arm out and fully tore the supraspinatus. I avoided overhead pressing and still go light on that (was never my thing anyway). The times are feel it now are mostly if I can't get to the gym - seems to tighten up then. I've found calisthenics really seems to help.
I'm not particularly injured but I have taken a week off from running. I was training for a race (which was last Sunday) and promised myself a week off afterwards. Currently on day 3. I'm finding it ok. I had a rather brutal sports massage today so ironically I feel like I've run a marathon. I've run 5x a week and I haven't had more than 2 days off in a row since starting running in jan 18 so this is very new to me.
I'm doing it because I have had a few muscle issues recently, IT band soreness and I have a bunion/metatarsal Pain that I neglect also, so I knew after racing I needed to actually rest for a bit.

Physio has told me I‘be got another couple of week off it so I’m not happy!
Hood news is I can cycle and swim, although I find swimming such a faff.
I’ve been injured for 16 months now. Can’t walk very well, certainly no running, have to come down stairs sideways. Consultant says it’s an overuse injury to my fibula and tendon and am looking at surgery. Not sure I will ever be right again.
I am getting over a really bad ankle sprain that I did at the end of August.
I can't do all the stuff I normally do like run on the fells or rock climbing so am trying to be grateful that now I can do a few things like gentle road running and swimming. I was so depressed when I couldn't do anything at all that I will never take anything for granted again!
I'm on end of week 3 of no running / no gym, for what feels like a muscle strain that just won't go away. I honestly can't remember the last time I ran completely pain-free. I know what the difference is between just being a bit sore and pain from some sort of injury as I've been a runner for >35 years now.
Just the last 3-4 years have been constantly in pain from one thing or another - first knees; then when that got sorted; a 9 week wait to diagnose possible compressed discs which turned out to be nothing; now tight hamstrings and hips.
Been going to deep tissue massage for a few weeks to try to get on top of this, but just running across the road seems to make my right leg 'twinge' and now I'm starting to believe I'm just being a woos as it just doesn't feel like an injury any more, just a pain!
Joe Brown I could have written your post, I have the same pain. It feels like I have a little tear in my buttock, where the hamstring meets the glute. Not agony, just twinges but I cannot remember the last time I was pain free. It hurts more after running than during.
I've had sports massages but they seem to make me ache all over, my leg muscles are very tight and she really hurts me when she is doing it. I took a week off and it improved but didn't heal, so perhaps I need to take longer off?
I'm fed up with being injured. Had nasty broken leg a couple of years ago, I had to start swimming as other types of exercise were ruled out, just got to the point this year when I was able to start light running again and I sprained my ankle pretty badly so had to rest again. A few months on from that and starting to exercise again, wham my Achilles is playing up. Just want to feel fit again!
I’m reluctantly resting my foot and hoping it’s not PF. But even doing a bit of light sewing today with a foot pedal made it feel sore earlier ffs! After being up early hours with a vomiting child, who then spent all day in bed I was house bound so thought I’d catch up on sewing only to find that niggling it too If it’s any consolation though I have previously had horrendous 18mth v.slow recovery from back disc problems so I know that time, rest, and gentle build back up you can get moving again but it’s hard to be patient. But boy my mid-40s bod is creaking a lot more sore now as the hormones go mental oh joy.. Hope we all feel better soon.

I am slightly dismayed that at 45 everything seems to stop working and it is just continuous maintenance/ injury.
I tried my calf out on Wed; just 1km run then walk then 1km run and it’s still not right so Here we go for another week of not doing anything. The really hard bit was that as I was running I had that feeling of everything working; I had comfy trainers, my legs felt strong, it was a lovely trail through the woods by the river, the bam! Niggle then pain.
I've got torn cartilage in my knee. Just a tiny bit and having regular physio so it is getting better but it's still sore. I'll jog slowly round Parkrun tomorrow, the physio said it was fine to run gently.
I'm really annoyed too, I just want to go out and run. Not an ultra-marathon or anything, just an ordinary 5k, 10k run.
Also enjoy weight training but have to avoid any squats with big weights for now. Today I couldn't even squat with a 10k weight.
But it cod be worse, right? Look on the bright side and all that...
45 was when it all started going downhill for me too .. have to look after the body a heck of a lot more these days.
TriSkiRun99 I had PF and found that the symptoms improved dramatically once I started using insoles in the boots and shoes I used for walking. As I've got older my instep has started to collapse inwards - its very common apparently once you get to a certain age - probably over 45 by the comments on here!
The insoles I used were £10 from my local chemist but if the problem is severe you can get them bespoke from a podiatrist. I wanted to see if the problem could be alleviated before I forked out for the expensive ones and discovered that the cheap ones do the job for now.
Thanks blobby I bought some cheap memory foam insoles, rested from running for 5days and stretched n iced my foot which has all really helped. Also re-laced my trainers abs have run 3x with minimal issues. Yes my toe joint feels bit sore but stretching under my foot & rolling on a ball has all helped. Think it may just be another thing post-45 I’ll have to manage 🙄
Good to hear that the insoles helped! I am off for a five minute run as directed by the physio. Wish me luck. Cannot believe that a calf can cause so much bother.
Can increase by 5 mins every three days. I have not run properly for 6 weeks and am feeling very unfit and flabby.
Slowly does it now. It will take me longer to find my running kit than it will to run.
So good to find this thread and not feel alone with my injury frustration. I've been injured for almost 3 months now and I'm going insane. I have tennis elbow AND golf elbow. It's taking forever to recover. It means I can't lift any weights. Or row. Or ski. At one point I couldn't even carry a 500ml bottle of water as it hurt too much. I initially just switched to using one arm but that meant I semi-injured that arm too by over-loading it. Duh! Yes, I know!
I totally sympathise with what an earlier poster wrote about it being one continuous series of injuries. I'm 49 and my body doesn't work as well as it used to. I'm carrying a few injuries from my 'youth' which don't help either.
I'm still working out in the gym but have reduced the number of workouts I do by two-thirds, as well as reducing the intensity. I've reached the point where I almost drool over other people working out as I'm so jealous of their injury-free state. I feel lardy and fat and out of shape. And in 2 weeks, I'm judging in a gym competition so really don't want to be the out-of-shape judge! I'm the only judge who isn't a professional personal trainer - most of the competitors are PTs too. Argh!
Tennis elbow and golf elbow! It just sounds like insult upon injury.
I know exactly what you mean about seeing other people exercise and being frustrated. I saw my running club out the other night and I had a little curse under my breath as I longed for my high viz and head torch.
I always think that this is a great time of year if you like exercising outside, as you really get to enjoy autumn so I am even more pissed off.
I managed a 10 minute run yesterday. It was lovely, even though I can normally do it without my thighs feeling like they are working hard and my hear rate going through the roof. Still, that's what no running for 7 weeks does to you.
I am allowed to do 15 mins on Sat. that'll get me round the block. Cross country it ain't....
