Exercise

I've walked 12000 steps. Have I REALLY burnt 500 calories?!

That's what my pedometer app says. That seems a lot! Apparently I've walked 5 miles.

If your pedometer is correct I think you would burn around 500 cals by doing 12000 steps of walking but you would have to be sure it is correct.
If you look up the difference in cals burned between sedentary and lightly active it is around 300-500 but depends on how heavy you are. Heavier people would burn more doing the same exercise .

I'm not sure it's correct, but I have been for a long walk. Hmm. How can I check it?

I do around about 1000 steps per 1km run. For a walk when stride length is less it's about 1250 steps for 1km. So 5 miles is around 8km - about 10,000 steps.

As for calorie burn, that's more about How long you were running for, rather than how many steps.

A walking pace is likely to burn between 5-8 cal per minute, depending on various factors like how fast you're going, how much weight you carry and whatnot.

So what you don't mention in your OP is how long the 5 mile walk took you. Assuming it took you around 1h-1h30m or so, 500 calories sounds about right.

If I do 2 45 min walks with my dog and am on my feet for about 5 hrs at work my pedometer says I have done around 12000 steps

I walked 7100 steps tonight and my fitbit says I've burned 445 cals.
So depending on your and mine weight difference id say yours is pretty much accurate
