Really want to run but my knees are fu**ed - is this a possibility or should I just forget about it?
I know nothing about jogging or knees but it sounds like a terrible idea to me sorry x
What sort of fucked?
It might be possible, but you'd have to build up really, really gradually. And it might be worth being asseed by a physio before even beginning.
I have a tendon injury in my knee, I did it in my teens. Commonly known as 'jumpers knee'. According to the sports therapist I have seen it’s a knee injury that benefits from moderate exercise - hence why it was painful in my 20s, grew stronger as I learned to run, but was aggravated by marathon training.
Worth going to get an opinion from a sports therapist, they’ll be able to advise a sensible starting plan and/or exercises to strengthen them.
I ran after a torn meniscus injury. I could manage a couple of days in a row but 3 days in a row would hurt - I never ran much more than 5k. It was just a keep fit, natter time with my neighbor.
I found having my gait analysed and then getting the viva barefoot trainers helped.
Do you do any strength training, especially for your knees? How do you feel when you've jogged a little?
Depends on what kind of fuckery your knees are suffering from!?! Is it tendon or muscle or meniscus/cartilage?
Depends. My knee is somewhat fucked after an injury 3 years ago. I personally just use a knee strap and carry on, but the level of how fucked and if you’ll damage it further is what will determine if you can do the same.
If you do I strongly recommend very good trainers with good cushioning effect and a support brace
My DH friend had various cartilage probs in his youth. ( football and squash). He was warned to stop playing 30yrs ago. Now mid 60s and had knee replacement which has not really worked due to ends of bone being worn away. If you have been told to stop then take up swimming or something different. It’s not worth compromising your mobility in old age.
Depends what the problem is. I've had knee problems for a year caused by an injury but I've worked with a physio on building up stability in my knees, strength in leg and butt muscles and loosening my calf muscles.
Now I can finally get back out running.
You need to be a assessed by a sports physio who can advise you on other exercises to help.
It's meniscus tears both knees.
Haven't had an operation ever as decided to try physio exercise instead - but to be honest I have lapsed with this.
I try to swim and cycle but need to increase these - swimming helps hugely.
I also need to spend more time on squats / strength building.
Just wondering if it's crazy to even think about running again one day?
My knees also make horrible crunchy noises
God reading that I sound so lazy I know - it's the usual problem of being a working mother & not making time for myself - something that needs to change!
Are squats good for that type of injury, they often aggravate knees.
Mine is a bit arthritic and apparently some people do run ok on arthritic knees, but it probably involves a lot of pain and ice. I am not optimistic about getting back to running.
I find runners world articles can be quite informative, maybe you could google articles on it? And if you do decide to, definitely don’t increase distance or speed too soon. Consider ‘Jeffing’, running with 30 second walk recovery intervals.
Take a look at the 'slow jogging' movement (also called Niko Niko) as a way of easing back into it.
"Listen" to your knees! I ran until I developed arthritis in mine. The doctor advised me, strongly, to stop. I am also a hill walker and although on occasion making steep descents gives some pain, on the whole it is a beneficial activity, strengthening the muscles. No, it is not a direct substitute for running but days in the hills with good company are great (difficult/impossible if you have small DC though). Some local Ramblers Association groups do family walks. There are also Young Rambler groups (full of young professionals, Ramblers are not all ancients like me - a common misconception). Swimming also excellent.
Heavens I wouldn’t dream of doing squats with my dodgy knee. I’d avoid that if I were you I think!
I have bad knees, patellar tendonitis, which was fine for running, no issues with knees while running at all (can't cycle much though).
Now I have plantar fascitis from running, which is basically just tendonitis on the sole of the foot. FFS. I am doomed.
I had a meniscus tear years ago from a cricket injury and had keyhole to cut some out and stop it tearing more. Not gonna lie, the knee has never quite been 100% again but with strength training and some really good stretches on other parts of the bottom half from hips down im now running 5-6 miles two or three times a week with an occasional shorter tempo run if time allows.
But I did find that flexibility and strength of the whole leg hip system was key, not just knees. I had tight hips and ITB, which a PT helped me loosen up and strengthen. One calf was more tense than the other from where I’d subconsciously used one leg slightly more than the other. And so on. Everyone is different and numerous subtle ways.
I’d say find a running specialist physio or PT and have a few sessions where they observe your gait and what not and see what they can suggest. Good luck!
