Trail shoes - recommendations please

Road shoes are Saucony - they’re my second pair of this brand and I quite like them!

I currently have a pair of cheap Nikes as I rarely run trails, but over the summer will be doing a lot more off road so need a decent pair.

I have tried Ons and didn’t like them. Asics never fit my wide feet.

I’ve looked online at Saucony Koa - would love to hear any reviews! Or would I be better sticking to something more trail based like Salomon?

Sadly my local running shop only had Asics and Ons trails so I’m going to have to order online, try at home and return if they don’t fit. Not ideal....!

Thanks Smile

If you get on well with your Saucony shoes, try the Saucony Peregrines. They get good reviews and people in my club love them.
Not really a fan of Salomon shoes, I've tried several of them and they aren't that comfortable on hard ground. Especially the speed cross.
I run in La Sportiva Akasha for longer distances where I need a lot of grip or for quicker general trails I use La Sportiva Helios 2.0.

The peregrines look nice and not a bank breaking price either.

I’ll be running around 10k in the week with Club on a mixture of trails - rocky / chalky to riverside hardcore type stuff. I’ve done a few road marathons and having done a couple of trail 10 milers I’m considering upping that to a half or full so I need to be comfortable.

I’ll have a look at the other ones you’ve mentioned, thank you.

No problem.
As I say the people in my club really love the peregrines.
I run almost exclusively off road. Races are from 5k to 50 Miles so it depends what I'm doing and where which pair I chose.

I have peregrines and love them. So comfy and grip is fab.
I ran a marathon in them having only worn them for 2 miles before hand and had no problems.
They come up small in my opinion.

I had to go up a size and a half in my Saucony roads.

I’ve gone from a seafront, flat promenade lover to splashing through mud and enjoying the woods so much that I’m keen to carry on. I had SO much fun running trail at the weekend and loved that we were running for fun (and medals!) - a complete contrast to my last race which was London!!!

DD has Saucony Everrrun and thinks they're fine.

I'm a weirdo who has Hoka. Bought for snow, also good on undemanding terrain (I don't do really rough)

Which saucony roads do you have? I’ve always had nikes (also have wide feet) but have enjoyed the peregrines so much I’d like to try some roads too.
Trail is fantastic. So many brilliant events too.

I always loved the Adidas Kandida but after a break from running I bought a newer model and didn't like them so much.

I'm currently on Saucony Peregines too.
They are short and wide. My feet actually aren't swimming in the size 4s (given that I'm a size 2 so have to size up by default. The toe is quite rounded so when my foot is warm and swollen, I can notice them on my 4th toes (disproportionately long compared to the rest of my short square feet!)

I like them though. They have good grip and some give for the roads and grit I use to get to more remote sections of route.

Kandida? Kanadia? Kanidadia? Can't remember 😂

I've got Salomon speedcross and whilst they are great in terms of grip, the pp is right that they aren't all that comfortable if you are doing any running on hard ground. They are also quite a lot narrower than my asics road trainers which is annoying, but I do more road than trail running so I just put up with them!

I have Innov 8s, 2 pairs, roclites and X-claws. These are standard fit, which means wide and comfy! The roclites are best on rocky trails, the X-claws on everything else. I love them! My road shoes are Saucony and I like the peregrines but the Innov 8s really suit me.

cauliflowershower I currently have ISO Freedom for short distances, Hurricanes for anything over half marathon distances, although I’d opt for them on some 10milers too depending on how I feel, if I’ve got any niggles etc.

Since They make up daft names, don’t they?!

Urgent my feet are quite square so that’s good news!

mister if they’re narrower than Asics I’d stand no chance as I find Asics too snug. I’ll also need multi-terrain... thanks for the tip.

emummy I’ll check those out, thank you. I run on the South Downs which are rocky / chalky and so slippery when it’s been raining!

Breaking in some Saucony Peregrines myself this week. Have also got on well with Mizuno for trail running.

I’d forgotten about Mizuno. I’ve never worn them so don’t have the fall back of knowing the sizing to order online.

DD has persuaded me to take her shopping over the weekend so I may venture further afield to go into a larger shop with trails to try.

I have Salomons & Asics and I have very narrow feet. I would be extremely wary of getting Salomons without trying lots on first

I have Salomon Speedcross 4 grt for winter and innov8 roclite for summer. Love them both for different reasons, innov8 do a good range of shoes for different terrains. Get last season shoes for half the price on sport shoe.com

Salomon are slim fitting so I'm looking to try an Altra lone peak for the wide toe box.

Found some Salomon Speedcross in Decathlon - blimey they are VERY narrow! A definite no. Glad I didn’t order them.

I’m going to venture further afield to try a load on and listen to my sensible head that tells everyone never to order running shoes without trying on! Patience is not one of my strengths Grin

I'm not sure where you are but if you are running on the South Downs you might be near Brighton so you could give these guys a go.
They do a few different brands including Saucony, Brooks, Mizuno, Altra, NB an Asics

I'm another Saucony fan. I have worn Mizuno and Asics road shoes and they're OK but I would stick to Saucony. They last ages which is a big plus.

Haha yes I’m near Brighton! It’s a pain getting over there though... I’ve just tried on Peregrines and Innov8 Roclite 280. Peregrines were more of a snug fit, and other than the sole I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between trails and roads so confident they’d be comfortable. However, the Innov8s were SO light and had loads more room in the toe box.

Also tried Altra trails - didn’t like.

I’m going to have a look in JogShop and then hopefully I’ll be able to choose!

Haha, yes that's the main difference between my shoes. The Helios are super light but I can't wear them for longer than 10/15k normally.
Just for balance I checked out my OH shoes and she uses Brooks Puregrit.

I did say to the guy in the shop that the lightness of the Innov8 280s concerned me as I was planning a trail marathon in the autumn and I’d ditched my Saucony Freedom in favour of the Hurricane as the Freedoms were no good after 10 - 13 miles.

It’s so complicated! Maybe I’ll go barefoot Grin
