How did you start? Been trying one minute run, one minute jog, one minute walk and repeat for half hour but I am so tired.

Also I am by a park now but moving to an area where I will be on a B road and only partial pavement.

Should I get a running machine or try to find a cross country route?

I found a running club’s beginners guide to running online and followed it religiously.

IIRC it was an 8 week guide that built up to running continuously for 30 mins. I bought a cheap watch with a stop watch and was careful timing my 2 mins running, 1 min walking etc.

Once I could run for 30 mins I challenged myself to run for 5k in 30 mins. Once I could do that I moved to 10k.

Once I could run for 10K I started challenging myself to get faster and then moved to half marathons.

When I started I found running for 1 minute hard. Within 6 months I could run a half marathon.

Remember you don’t need to be running fast you should still be able to speak.

Running is fun once you get going but you just need to grit your teeth a bit through the easily days.

Daisy, have you heard of Couch to 5K?

It's a brilliant way to get into running, & there are several support threads for it on here.

Thank you I will check them out 😊

I am worried about running on a road without pavement. Do I just need to get high vis gear for early mornings (before commute and/or school run) x

I’ve always advocated Couch 2 5k, and have nearly completed it again after I realised I’d lost the ability to run for longer than a few minutes. It’s very much jogging for me, it takes me about 35 mins to complete 5k (including warm up). I’ve just been doing it with my kids which has been great as something we can do as a family, but it’s been hard fitting all the runs in (they’re never home before 6 in the week and now it’s really too dark at that time). I should really run tonight but have had a manic couple of days and am talking myself out of it. But working from home tomorrow so will try to get us all out in the morning Grin.

The one I use is BBC and you can choose a ‘coach’, we have Jo Wiley as I like her and she also came to running later in life and wasn’t a natural!

YY to Couch to 5K.

I wouldn’t run on unlit roads with no pavement at this time of year. Could you join a club?

You've just got to power through the first few weeks when you feel like rubbish and like you'll never be able to do it. And also realise that even the fittest of runners feel uncomfortable sometimes and have rubbish runs.

I've ran marathons and I can tell you that no matter how far you learn to run, that first 2 miles ALWAYS feels a bit strange. Your breathing hasn't settled yet and it takes a good 2 miles for me to feel okay, but once I'm beyond that point I feel like I could run forever.

I always tell beginners to not give up because they feel bad running 1 mile. Get beyond that distance and you'll notice a change. Eventually, when you've gained some fitness.

I think I will have to put a running machine in the garage as I have concerns about the road I would have to go down to get to the park and it would have to be before or after Uni and work so would be dark this time of year x

Then when I’m improving I can find a running club x

Can you run at lunchtimes? That's what I do this time of year.

Report
DaisyRaine90 · 25/10/2017 23:22

Yes but only once or twice a week and it would mean missing Pilates or swimming as that’s the only 2 days I’m not working or at uni and DP is working from home ( he will be working most weekends).

It would be too irregular.
I might see if they will let me use the field next door. We are trying to get it anyway a) so we can have a paddock for a horse and b) because otherwise they will build on it and impair the view.

I think it will have to be a running machine at home for now until I can get my fitness up to join a running club and start doing some fun runs etc x

I wish I Drove then I’d just pop in the car to the nearest path or park 🙄

I have such a fear of roads though, I am a very slow learner and nervous driver. It’s been a frustrating and slow process.

I don’t ride but we would like the kids too and I’ve always wanted to keep animals. I’d rather get chickens or pigs but apparently they smell too bad 🙄

I’m a city kid so don’t know much about this country life stuff 😂

Re running at night, I do stick to pavements but have a cap with a light in the brim and a high vis jacket with a red light on the back to help keep me visible.

I might do the same as the pavement begins after about half a mile and doesn’t stop again. But for when it’s dim light not actually dark.

I am going to read up on couch to 5k when I get chance this morning

Have any of you been out running already?

I did C25K & then 5-10K last year. I moved house recently so my routine's dropped a bit but I've got back into doing a 5K as part of my commute a couple of mornings a week, & when that feels comfortable again I'll make it longer. I have a lot more energy in the mornings than in the evenings.

Having said that, I'm childfree so I don't have to work around anyone else, & I live in London so for me it's easy to get off the tube a few stops early & run through the parks.

Read up on couch to 5k and looked up some local running routes. There are some good routes near my daughters school so if I put her in breakfast club I might have time to run 1 extra day a week making it 3 or 4 days.

Is it reasonable to swim or do Pilates and go for a run on the same day?

I used to do back to back classes but that was before kids 😂

C25K is excellent. Feels so good to get to the end and run 30 mins straight. I then did bridge to 10k and am running a half marathon next March. I had never run in my life before C25K

That’s very encouraging I stopped running at 10/11 when my breasts came in as beer had a decent sports bra. I used to love sprinting and relays. Simpler times before men 🙄 and kids 💙💖

I have big boobs. I like the shock absorber run bras.

If you used to run it'll probably come back quickly. It seems to be easier to come back each time I have a break

Couch 2 5k was a complete revelation. Not sporty. Not a runner. Just completed it. Have all sorts of health problems.
Good bra. Spend £50 ish on shoes. Get a running belt rather than an arm thing. Size larger for shoes, btw.
All good.

I started on the C25K but I found it didn’t really work for me. Just pushed myself to begin with using the run/walk method and slowly extended the time spent running. Also, don’t make it into a chore only go for a run when you’re really feleing it Smile You would need bright clothing/high vis for the morning as even with streetlights you’re not always visible.

It’s hard work to begin with but, once you’ve caught the bug it’s amazing! I run 4 times a week and can comfortably run a half marathon without stopping now. (Couldn’t run to the end of the road to begin with!)
