How many steps do you do per day?

I have a Fitbit and it's logging that I do on average around 6000 steps per day. I've just read that anything below 5000 steps is classed as sedentary, between 5000-7000 is low active, 7000-10000 is average and 10000 plus is active.
Think I definitely need to up my game if I want to get fit and healthy

Since I got my fitbit about a year ago I've forced myself to do a minimum of 13000 A day. It was a bit difficult to start with but now just part of my daily routine. It has definitely made me feel healthier. It means even if I haven't actually done any strenuous exercise, I have at least moved my body.

13000 steps is good going and that's almost double what I do. Does it take you a while?

On school run days I do between 13k-17k steps. At weekends it's more 9k-11k. If I've mowed the lawn it can be anywhere up to 30k but always at least 24k. Before DD started school I was really struggling to get the steps up so I reckon you need to add a 35 minute walk in twice a day to get good results! Or you could come mow my lawn for me..!

I aim for 12,000 as a minimum. Usually get there and in the eighteen months I've been doing it have dropped two dress sizes. (Have been watching what I eat as well, though).

Think I'll increase it by 2000 steps per day until I'm up to 13000 steps as a minimum. I'm not sure I'm even doing 7000 steps as I think doing things like the dishes or showering bump the steps up

On a run day (so a cheat day!) about 25,000
Non run, 16,000

I’ve swapped from a Fitbit to an Apple Watch recently and tend to average around or just under 10k a day. On office based days, I really have to make an effort to get steps up (a run usually sorts that out), it’s not been unknown to do under 5k in an office day. Also I’m no longer doing the school run which although short, was an easy 2000 steps a day.

My Apple Watch is less fixated on steps and more on a variety of general movement, elevated heart rate and active calories burned which actually suits my lifestyle better. I try to exercise (at the moment) 4-5 times a week, which is comprising 3 short runs a week (couch to 5k, we’re at 25 mins running), a yoga class once or twice a week, a PT session fortnightly, and maybe a home weights session as well. It takes up so much blooming time!!

Yesterday, 63000.

A normal day (where I don't run a marathon Wink) but do at least one lot of exercise, I make 25000.

A rest day, maybe 15000.

It's vanishingly rare I don't hit 12000 (my daily target).

It depends where you start from and your fitness as to how to build up. For various reasons I get nowhere near the 10k steps. I like the band as it makes me think about my activity level.

Is 2k extra steps a day a realistic target. If so and you’ll exceed it some days great. If it is going to very hard would you be more likely to get to your target increasing by 1500 and feeling really successful because two days a week you did 2000 more? (Kind of thing I get told at the gym.)

I'm guessing none of you have office jobs?

My target is 2400 calories a day, which for me is anywhere between 11,500 and 13,500 steps. I’ve reached that every day for the last 5 weeks, but had to take a break today because of a painful (blistered) foot.

I can’t leave the house everyday so I often just walk on the spot whilst watching TV. Which I know isn’t as effective as a proper walk outside, but it’s better than sitting on the sofa I guess. On a really lazy day (like today) I can do less than 500 steps Blush

I recently got a Fitbit and am struggling to get up to the 10,000 to be honest which is a shame. Some days there just isn't time. I drive to work and back and the school isn't very long so I have to make a deliberate effort to go out for a walk which I'm not managing most days at the moment. Decided to aim for 8000 a day for now as I need to feel like it's achievable!!

Austentatious, I do about 15,000 on weekdays and I have an office job. Walk to work and back plus lunch hour stomping round the park with an audiobook, adds up nicely.

I've done 10,000 today so I'm pleased with that. I have a very sedentary job and I don't have kids or a dog to bump my steps up

Aye, it's impossible to go for a walk if you don't have a dog Wink

Well done on hitting 10k!

Report
Teddy7878 · 09/10/2017 19:58

I didn't mean that haha - just meant it's probably easier for people with dogs to bump their steps up every day if they are forced to go for at least one decent walk. I often have to sit 12 hours behind a desk with only brief breaks, and when I get home Im mentally exhausted and just want to collapse. Forced myself to walk the longer route home which gave me an extra 4800 steps. Will do that each day from now on

Some days it can be 7000 but most days it's about 1300, occasionally it's between 15000-20000 but that's when I run too.

That's really good and I definitely get what you mean - half my daily steps are walking the dog! Also add a couple of thousand on a school day from the mad panic running about the house in the mornings and, although we drive, we can't park very close to school so I have a 7-10min walk from car to class door to car, morning and afternoon.

I work from home so am very sedentary. Yesterday I had to stay in all day because I was waiting for a parcel, so by the time I went to bed I'd only done about 6000. I did swim in the evening though.

A walk into our local town centre, even if I don't really need anything, usually adds around 3000, so I can get it close to 10,000 most days.

However, I run three times a week so I always cover more than 70,000 a week even if I have some very sedentary days.

I'm really impressed with those of you who are doing way in excess of 10K a day!

My target is set at 10k but I average 15k, 20k if I've been to the gym. When I started in May I averaged 5k a day and I've just built it into my daily routine. I used to drive to school but now we walk and that's my 10k done (it's half an hour away). The rest is general daily activity and then 30 minutes on the cross trainer (I try to do this 3x a week) usually gets me up to 20k. At weekends I walk to the gym and back (I don't have time to do this in the week if I want to do bedtime stories!) and that gets my 10k in place of the school run. I find the fitbit so motivating and it has been life changing for me.

Gawd this is depressing. I have either a car commute (not going to walk 15 miles into central London ta) or work at home (10 steps). Very, very rarely take a lunch break as leave at 5ish to collect kids so need to work. I think I'm going to have to start getting up earlier to run / walk because 10-15k steps takes time I just can't seem to find (walked to post office and back today. iPhone made it 4.5k steps, took 40 minutes out of my day thought)

But I do go to gym and cycle and don’t get steps for that as i collect steps on my phone
