Talk to me about hula hooping

I've never been able to hula hoop, but I've been reading a bit about powerhooping and I'm tempted to give it a go.

Can I buy any old weighted hoop?

And does it work? I have a lot of weight to lose which I'm tackling through diet and running, but have no abs to speak of.
