Garmin or Fitbit?

Trying to get a bit fitter and want to get a smart watch. Bit confused over whether to get a Garmin or Fitbit.

Don't need all singing all dancing but one that does all the basics. Have had lots of conflicting recommendations so wondered what MNs thought?

What do you want it to do, motivate you or accurately record what you did?

Hmm both really but I guess motivation is my main priority

Most people start out with cheap & cheerful Fitbits which are good enough for motivation. Move to something with more bells & whistles if you decide you want it (to spend more on that, to get more accuracy or functionality).

I don't have any experience of a garmin but the next fitness gadget I buy will be one :) I've got a Fitbit at the moment, it's absolutely brilliant for motivating me into doing excercise, well worth the money I spent on it and I would say if you don't have a current exercise programme that you'd like to develop then its the best fitness monitor to start with. Well, that or similar products

The Fitbit calorie count is way off for me - over estimates hugely, but it's fine for motivating me to move more, I just don't try to eat my exercise calories.

I got a Garmin last week and, seven days in, am loving it. It tells me to move when I've been still too long, seems very accurate on steps and distance and has really got me off my bum over the last week. I have it synced with Garmin Connect and MFP so am watching calories as well. Have just started C25K and it's a real novelty watching heart rate and steps as I crawl run. Really recommend it.

So treated myself to a Garmjn Vivosmart HR!

Love it as a motivational tool and really easy to use.

Only downside is no GPS so can't record cycling,
