Golf - what are the benefits?

I live right next door to a gorgeous golf course and have always dismissed it as a thoroughly boring sport.
Lately I've been watching all the cars pulling up and often families trooping along together for what must be a lovely day golfing.
They offer lessons - I'm not particularly wealthy, but I've recently toyed with the idea of learning and joining in too.
Has anyone learned from scratch and what do you get out of it?

I started learning with a friend, but unfortunately she didn't take to it and dropped out of it after about 6 months, and I stopped as well.

I have to say I really enjoyed it. I can see myself getting the bug. I've put it on hold for the time being as ive started running and concentrate on that, I only have the energy for one thing!

I see myself taking it up with Dh in a few years time, once we've got more time on our hands.
