Bikes for beginners

I am feeling so unfit that I have decided to start cycling in the local park at weekends. The last time I cycled was as a child so I am feeling rather anxious. I would welcome any advice on what bike would be ideal for a complete beginner like me:)

Is there somewhere you can hire a bike from for a bit, to help you decide what you want? You could also investigate cycle training, to brush up your skills and learn new routes.

Yes I second Blue, bike hire is a good place to start.

I have a Claude Butler Hybrid. Basically it's like the bike I had when I was at school. It has thicker tyres and is chunkier than a racing bike, so is better on trails and can take a few bumps. Hybrid is a more upright riding position than a racing bike, which I find more comfortable.

A mountain bike has really thick tyres and takes more energy to pedal.

I shall tell you now, if you get into biking one bike is just not enough.

A good bike shop will sort you out. If you buy a second hand bike make sure it's the right size for you, otherwise it just makes life too hard.

There is a great website Bikeradar, it has loads of advice and reviews on it.

Happy biking.

Yep, a good second hand hybrid bike would be good. nice seated position and fingers over the gears and brakes.

be a bit careful over 'local shops' - they are prob. best for advice and selling you things BUT they are under pressure to make a profit, so can be a bit pricey.

Thanks BlueChampagne, knittingnoodles and UnoPan. Your comments and suggestions are very helpful. I looked at Hybrid bikes online and did wonder if that was the best choice. There is a cycle hire in the park but I am nervous of getting on a bike after so many years in front of so many people! I have a feeling I will be horizontal within seconds..

You'll be suprised how you remember how to cycle. But for some confidence building, google 'your area adult cycle training' and see what comes up - in my area there is free cycle training, and sky Breeze (women only) beginners rides

You know what they say about riding a bike ... Hope you get back in the saddle soon.

You could always look on Freecycle or Gumtree for something inexpensive to get yourself started again, or does a friend have one you could borrow?

Have a look at the likes of bikeright. They offer free courses that allow you to brush up on your bike skills. The instructors know about bikes so I imagine they will probably be able to offer a bit of advice on the different types of bikes.

Decathlon do a great road bike range which includes straight handle bars, starting price around two fifty for brand new bike. They had excellent write up in cycling weekly

Bike hire is fine but remember bikes will be well worn so not always easiest to ride.

Try British cycling and go to their breeze sections for local rides, they will give you help and encouragement.
