I really want to start running but being on the wrong side of 50 and nearly 4 stone overweight I really don't know how/where to start. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up some tips and the thing I most lack, motivation...

Thank you Thursday, just marking my place Smile

Thank you Thursday did not realise we were so close to both 1000 posts and 1000 miles :)

welcome arkengarth lovely to have you with us! Motivation and friendly folk are plentiful on this thread. Lots of advice on the way I am sure....usual drill is get started on couch to 5k, invest in a good sports bra, find your local parkrun and remember you are doing better than everyone at home on the sofa Grin.

Hey Thursday, thanks for starting a new thread :o

Ark couch to five k (cs5k) is a very popular program for getting started with running, here's a link:
www.nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/couch-to-5k-plan.aspx

searching will bring up loads more info!

The great thing with running ark is that you quickly see yourself progress which can make it quite addictive!

Arkengarthdale · 30/12/2014 23:06

Thanks for the link Suzanne and for the encouragement from the rest. I guess my biggest hurdle is self-consciousness but as it's dark by 4pm it's not really a great excuseSmile

Report
Suzannewithaplan · 30/12/2014 23:18

running trumps everything Ark, it is way more strenuous than walking, cycling, not to mention sitting on a park bench watching people go by.

No one is allowed to look askance at you for running, if they do then just know that they are out of orderAngry
You are running
they are not.
Nuff said!

Hello, can I join in? I've been running for many years but am mostly a treadmill runner these days, and need a bit of motivation following a shit couple of months at the end of 2014 (bereavement, new job, run down, roll on 2015....please). If motivation comes in the form of new gear, I picked up some gorgeous Puma trainers, crop trousers and running vest at TK Maxx today, can't wait to try them.

I wasn't the wrong side of 50 but wa a 5st overweight when I started c25k Arkengarthdale and thoroughly recommend it. Started in January so did most running in the dark which really helped, was getting light as I was getting better and thinner :)

Welcome back Sirzy!

Thanks ThursdayLast, glad someone was paying attention to how many posts there were!

Mileage was 958.4, won't be adding any as my next planned run is nyd parkrun, working tomorrow and no one to run in the dark with me after :(

Report
MuseumOfHam · 30/12/2014 23:44

How does the mileage thing work? Do people just report on this thread how many miles they've run and add it all together? (Waves indiscriminately at everyone)

Report
cinnamongreyhound · 30/12/2014 23:53

Hi MuseumofHam! Yes, we do a monthly mileage tally for everyone on the thread. Feel free to add as you run, only a day left for December Wink

Report
MuseumOfHam · 30/12/2014 23:59

Thanks cinnamon,I expect I shall bump up the tally enormously (not!!!).

Report
Suzannewithaplan · 31/12/2014 00:12

No matter Museum, just give us your miles they all go in the one pot.

We're not far off the grand this month, maybe we can all pull together and make it for January ?Wink

I just read a book called run fat bitch run so will be starting with that program on new years day. I used to run years ago but then got fat. This year I managed to give up drinking and smoking so would like to concentrate on diet and exercise now. I had a few health issues this year and had to have an op and need another bigger one soon so need to be as healthy as possible.

My sister also read that book and it kickstarted a 3st weight loss for her. It's totally harsh and basic but it works Smile

I'll join the thread if I may although I'm a trail runner rather than a road runner which involves a run/ walk strategy over most routes due to inconveniently placed mountains. I'm targeting 70k per week in 3 sessions and training for two 50k races- one in Feb and one in March.

For all the beginners, 2 yrs ago I couldn't jog 5k so it's totally doable, and even one year ago I broke my foot and had to start almost from scratch. You'll get a good progression if you stick at it.

I've just don't the first week in couch to 2k and so far so good. Defenitly worth a go Ark, I go to some tracks where it's very quiet so no one can see me run. Today I ran in the park past people and it was actually ok.

Im going to a park run on Saturday, planning on walking and slow jogging round.

Thanks for starting the new thread, Thursday.
Hi Arkengarthdale, Museum and AggressiveBunting.
Arkengarthdalerunning can be a great way to lose weight and as you lose weight it will get so much easier. Another good book is 'Running like a girl' by Alexandra Heminsley. The endorphins and feel good feeling from running are wonderful, I've never had them from other endurance sports like cycling and rowing. Good luck and keep us posted!
Aggressive I'm another trail runner by preference, it is just that here in Brittany we have no mountains so what I do is very tame in comparison to you. My longest trail race was 42kms with 800m altitude in September so nothing compared to mountains, but it was a tough. There aren't many women in France who participate in the longer trail runs so I've had a few podiums Grin. Am currently training for the Rome marathon in March so doing mainly road running so as not to lose speed, but I'll be back on the trails next summer as I find them much more interesting to do and there is more camaraderie among the runners than with road racing.

Lovely to have serious trail runners here, I am looking forward to more off-road this year, I love the exploring feel of being a bit off the beaten track. Opportunities are limited from the front door but making the most of it when visiting parents and on holidays
