Watch/pedometer advice

I've started running seriously since Jan and have a 10 mile event in April. I really want a watch that will give me the distance while I'm out training, so I can push myself. The clip-on pedometers seem a bit frail and unreliable on distances measured, and I don't want to have to wait until I get home to download the info on my lap top. Can anyone recommend a device they use? Thanks!

I've got a Garmin Forerunner 10, the most cheap and cheerful one. It does distance, pace, time and calories on the watch itself and when you upload it all to the website it has graphs, splits and a map of where you went. If you're just looking for something basic then that's probably your best bet.

I have the Forerunner 10 too, and really like it

brilliant! thanks for your advice, I have been online to look at customer reviews and they are very positive. have either of you used it for swimming?

I don't think it's waterproof enough for swimming.

No, I was thinking of using it as a timer for swimming, but just go by the pool clock atm. Used it yesterday for cycling tho.

When I got mine, it was cheapest in lime green from John Lewis

I've got a Garmin 110, which is much like the 10, but can link up with a HRM. I'm really pleased with it.

Do you use an iPod?
Nano 7s and later can do all that.

I was using my iPhone with the nike+ sensor but it was grossly overestimating distances - adding on about a km for every 7 so I gave up on that.

Can you calibrate it? With the iPod you can calibrate it to your pace when you run a known distance.
