Looking for some sensible advice! Friend has signed up for a half marathon and is 'talking' me into doing it with her, I've only just started back doing a bit of running again after having dd3, before pregnancy was doing a lot of running/races with this friend, she reckons knowing me, that my fitness doesn't take long to come up to speed but I'm just thinking am I mad!!! Still have about a stone of pregnancy weight to loose but I am really tempted I've got the running bug again since starting back??? Any good advice????

Cheers

Frankly

I think that having something like that to train for is great motivation for losing the weight you want to lose, gives you a reason. If you used to go running etc before, you should give it a go. Just don't be too hard on yourself if your time isn't what you used to get if that makes sense?

Also, my husband doesn't do any exercise/training etc what so ever and has just signed himself up for a 52 mile bike ride in July to raise money for BHF. He doesn't even have a bike yet. He reckons he'll be fine LOL

Lol Kate at your hubby, but I like his style! Yeah to be honest time wouldn't be at the forefront of my mind (until I get into doing it probably) could be the push I need to get rid of that last stone, think I'm just a bit scared, I'm still in the 'I've just had a baby' state of mind lol, even tho she's 7 months!! Thanks for the encouragement Kate, am feeling like I might just commit to it yikessss!!!!

So 10 weeks till the race? If you have only just started running again, then I think it would be too soon tbh as you'd be courting injury to increase your mileage so quickly

Ooh Im doing my first half at the start of May too.

I have run recently so not in the same boat, although living in the middle of nowhere and working full time I dont get much chance of a run so worried about not getting up to miles anyway. Didn't realise its only 10 weeks away.

There are loads of running plans on the internet why not try googling one. Is it a big half marathon? Will there be other people just 'getting round' who maybe walk a bit? If so it wont be too hard would it? Mine is a big city half so I know that there will be others who wont be too experienced too.

That's one of my worries cmo, really wouldn't want injury trying to up the mileage that quickly, jeez only 10 weeks sounds a lot closer than 2 months, that's put it in a different perspective now! I've only recently got back to doing 5k/3 miles, must look at a few planners see how it looks.

Fair play to ya biscuits, my chances of getting out to do loads of training are a bit limited too with my dds and dh works long hours. It's a local half, there will be a good few people, like beginners doing it, so will be a lot of people run/walking, I'm not as geared up for it this morning!! Have to let my friend know by weekend as she wants to register, thinking I might give it a miss, there's another one in September, I might be better prepared for that! Good luck with your Biscuits ;-)

Using the 10% rule you would only be up to 8-9 miles by then, I think it is probably too soon :(

Why not suggest a 10k together though? Plenty around - I did a 10k race for life last year which was nice and relaxed, and took me nicely into a half in September

How far and how often are you running now? And how long have you been back running? Most training plans I've seen are usually 10-12 weeks and they assume that you're running 3 times a week and doing 3-4 miles each run.

Well I've told my friend I'm not ready she's going to do it on her own, but I said I would go out on some of her training runs with her, I've only just started back 2 weeks ago and running 5k comfortably, I think your right cmo, there's a few 10ks on during the summer that I have done before and some 5k races, so will tackle them first, as much as I would love to do it I don't want to get injured, put me off running again for months..esp when I have this last stone to get rid of.....thanks for all the advice folks....

Lol rudimentary:-)

OMG 2 months Shock that sounds a lot worse to me. I'm up to 7 miles now, but really worried. I decided back in November it would be a good idea so registered back then, now I'm not so sure that I shouldn't have done the 10K instead. I have just downloaded a training plan from runners world that starts Monday so next week it is. Eek.

Good luck MrFS.
