Where to go after Shred?(39 Posts)
Much as the title says!
Hadn't done the 30 day shred DVD for a while just been running and gymming. Sweated during level 3 but would like a bit more of a challenge so am looking for advice on which DVD to go for next!
I've just started ripped in 30, level one is about the same challenge as level three of the shred. I imagine by level four it will be crazy!
Was just eyeing that one up on Amazon! Is it the sand concept?
Yes, the same concept. The warm up is quite a lot longer and tougher and there are three exercises instead of two in the strength section.
I have to slightly disagree on L1 of Ripped. I think it is the easiest of any of her levels in any of her workouts (I have 7 of hers.) It is almost a v gentle intro to the world of JM and much easier than either L2 or 3 of Shred IMO. That said from L2 onwards she really gets going- there is a big jump from 1 to 2.
In terms of what next, depends on how much time you have and what you want to focus on (body parts? Cardio or strength?)
Omg, I am not looking forward to level 2 in that case! It probably depends on your own strengths I guess, I know lots of people find level 2 of the shred hard but I think it's ok. Which of her other dvds would you recommend notyummy?
I like No More Trouble Zones (all strength, but plenty of sweating and heavy breathing) and Burn Fat Boost Metabolism (mostly cardio, with one good killer core circuit thrown in.) They are longer- 45 mins with cool down and warm up- but broken into 7 circuits, and the DVD allows you to play them all or just do 4/5 if short if time. Both are pretty good all over work outs- although BFBM probably doesn't do that much for upper body.
Extreme Shed and Shred also good- similar set up to Ripped or Shred, although slightly less cardio I would say. Two levels of 30 mins each, which she wants you to work up it doing back-to-back, but you can choose to do one or the other. She has others that focus on more specific area (six week six pack, and killer buns and thighs- I'm not quite as keen on them but still ok!
I'll just copy and paste a reply I gave someone on the Jillian Michaels devotees thread about what to do after shred- the poster was trying to choose between Six Week Six Pack and Ripped in 30.
Here it is-
It depends if you want more of the same or something a bit different really. I went from shred to 6w6p, it was nice to have the change from the 3-2-1 system for a bit. Instead you do a longer circuit, then do it again speeded up a bit. It has plenty of cardio intervals in it and will certainly get you panting and sweating. L1 the beginner modification is no weights, so you should be ok with 1kg weights if you want to use them. I didn't find the weights in it too hard though and was fine with 3kg (I couldn't do all exercises in shred with 3kg). There is a lot of plank work, and I can really feel that my core is stronger as a result. I even have a little definition in my abs now. It is a little bit longer though- about 35 minutes all in I think, but worth it.
I'm doing Ripped now and I like going back to the 3-2-1 system as it's another change. It's pretty similar to shred but seems a bit harder. I would recommend getting some heavier weights too- heavier weights will help burn the fat off a bit more so you'll see those emerging abs .
Another one about the same length is Killler Buns & Thighs, very popular on this thread. Another mix of cardio and strength, and working such large muscles really helps burn those calories too.
No reason you can't mix them all up a bit too. I have stuck to working through them but I have fitted other work outs around the one I'm doing at the time. When I was doing 6w6p I occasionally added in a Banish Fat Boost Metabolism or No More Trouble Zones (with either of those you could pick out some of the circuits to make it shorter as they're both quite long). Now I'm mixing Ripped and Killer. L1 shred with weights for the cardio and heavier weights is a fab workout too. Mixing it up stops you getting bored and makes sure you work plenty of different muscles.
I love all of Jm DVDs. I have all bar 2! Today I did extreme shed and shred, try that. Banish fat is also challenging. What I find with all the DVDs is that you can ALWAYS push yourself just that little bit harder, you know, use heavier weights, use ankle and wrist weights, lunge deeper, jumper higher etc. I find the fitter I get the harder it gets, just because I push myself more!
I also just got her newest ones: Hard body and yoga inferno. They're good too.
If you want a challenge then No More Trouble Zones should provide it, I was left exhausted by that. It's mostly strength but will get your heart rate up, you can always get your cardio in by running. Or mix it with Banish Fat Boost Metabolism.
Ears did the 6w6p give you a six pack though?

I've chosen on price as they all seem to be good so the cheapest on Amazon was No More Trouble Zones.

No, my body fat percentage isn't really low enough for a visible six pack. I think for a woman to have a visible six pack they need to be somewhere under 20% body fat, and I don't really have the motivation for that.
I do have some pretty good definition now though, you can see the lines along the sides of my abs and I have a flat stomach. I wasn't expecting to really get a six pack so that is more than I was hoping for.
Yeah I've been frequently told that 6-packs are mostly made in the kitchen
Oh and if anyone's interested, someone on another thread has just said that JM has a fitness phone in podcast.
You won't regret getting NMTZ (well, you probably will at points, but not when you've finished the DVD ). I bet you end up with a few more of her DVDs too now. I have seven of them. bigbuttons, are you in the US? Hard body doesn't seem to be out in the UK yet, but the reviews are good.
Rioja, I'd recommend some sort of interval training for cardio fitness too. Research is showing that is the best way to improve fitness. You can just add some sprints into your runs and follow up with a slow recovery jog, or do a nice hilly route.
I've been doing a tabata class once a week which is amazing and an absolute killer too, the DVD a couple of times a week and I try to run at least 10 miles.
Next on my list is a TRX class! Have you tried those?
Wow, sounds like you're pretty fit then! NMTZ should be pretty good for you then to add a bit of strength in there. I need to get back into it and try and up my weights.
I'd love to try and get to some classes one day, but for now it's all JM DVDs at home. Two young children and a DH working long hours makes the gym unrealistic at the moment.
I'm not a naturally fit person (used to skive and smoke in PE lessons!) but now I love it.
I have a very helpful DM and run in my lunch breaks. Don't you find doing the DVDs hard with DC though? I was doing flying lunges earlier with a heavy toddler in my arms who wouldn't be put down!
EarSlaps, no I'm in the uk . I have a cheap dvd player from asda which plays all zones. So I just get the dvds fro the states. Having said that my hard body one seems to have 'disappeared', hence me doing extreme shed and shred. I did really try and push the boat out yesterday and boy am i sore today. That hasn't happened for ages!
