Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

There was ages ago. There's a half marathon thread knocking around somewhere too. But I'm always up for a new running thread!

I'm doing my first half in March, when's yours?

Sirzy there's a fairly long running parkrunning thread - but we chat about all things running, not just parkruns. Come and join us! Some of us are doing 10Ks and half marathons next year as well.

And a spin-off has just started with a plan for a MN 10K next year Grin

Reading or Silverstone? I'm doing a local one in Cambs, it's fairly small but only down the road from me.

Eau - are you doing the small Cambridge one on 2 March, as opposed to the bigger one a week later? Just nosey, because another MNer and I are doing the smaller one Smile

You mean Swavesey or Cambridge? I'm doing the Swavesey one.

how long did it take you to get from nothing too capable of half marathon?

We're doing the Cambridge Boundary Run - it's the week before the Cambridge Half Marathon.

Not sure if I'm capable yet Grin The training plans I looked at are usually about 12 weeks and assume that you're already running 3-4 miles a few times a week. If you're doing a 10k in May then you'll have loads of time to get ready for a half in September.

Ah, I'm not doing that one. Isn't that the full marathon distance?

Took me about 6 months to get up to half marathon fit. I ran 3 x a week r (1 short fast run / 30 mins). 1 medium run including hills ( 45/60 mins) and 1 long run (2hrs +).

I did a couple of 10k runs and one 10 mile run leading up to the half marathon. Not a great time as I injured my knee, did it in 2hr 29.

Thats what I am hoping Eau, I can do 5k now (mix of running and jogging) so pretty confident for the 10k, but the idea of half marathon is pretty scary - will be a good way of keeping me running though as I need to put in the work to stand a chance!

I would be over the moon to do it in that time Tired, actually I will be over the moon to just cross the finish line!

I did a couple of half marathons last year and now run the distance quite often as part of longer runs, I don't remember how long it took to be able to run so far but it wasn't ages, just weeks or months. Just keep extending your long run a bit each week, it grows very quickly!

Sirzy I did C25K in early 2011, and did my first half marathon in January 2012. DH was running 10K several times a week at the time, which encouraged me to start going further. I'm not fast, but enjoy the challenge of running longer distances - I've done 6 half marathons and a full marathon (and was regularly running more than half-marathon distance when I was training for the full).

Eau it's a half and a full. You can sign up with the option of only doing the half, which I've done, or deciding on the day whether to go the full distance Shock.

Ill join! You all sound a lot more advanced than me but I have been running for just over a year. Have a 10k to train for in march but find it hard to train at long distances in the dark. I can't run on the treadmill either - anyone else have that?!

Report
Sirzy · 26/12/2013 19:44

I can't stand running on treadmills. I have been going out early mornings to avoid running in the dark, I have got a hi-vis coat but still don't feel safe running in the dark.

Apparently there's a Peterborough half marathon. Anyone know it?

EauRougemasTree · 26/12/2013 20:05

The Great Eastern run is in Peterborough in October. If there are still places left aftef I do my half then I might do it.

Listening to that wind out there, and the bins being blown over, I don't think I am going to get my run this morning :( hopefully the winds will calm down a bit by early evening and I can go out then instead.

I wanted to run this morning but I'm scared of the wind. I do have gym membership so might go and run on the treadmill - am drinking pint of water at the mo to prepare.

I'm desperate to do summat after 2 days sat scoffing indoors.

I really recommend this book-

www.amazon.co.uk/Nonrunners-Marathon-Guide-Women-Training/dp/1580052053?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

Its written by a complete 'non-runner' who decided to train for a Marathon- very funny and written by a woman who I think we could all relate too.

i have read other half marathon/full marathon books which are much more technical etc- but the Dawn Dais book has real witty, laugh out loud passages.
