Baby bike helmet?

Hello,

I'm having trouble tracking down a helmet for my son. I'm planning on putting him on a bike seat after Christmas, by when he'll be 10 months. But I can't seem to find anything small enough.

Bike shops often have a standard first size that'd suit a wee one from 2-3ish but we managed to get a baby one on amazon no problem. Pop "baby bike helmet" in the search bar.

You won't find one as you're not supposed to put them in a bike seat or trailer till 1yr at the earliest. Their heads and necks cannot cope with the bouncing around. There's a few studies online if you want more info. HTH.

Ok, maybe you will find one but it's not recommended, we chose to wait a while.

We had a Specialized Small Fry for both DCs, from about 12 months. It was the smallest one we could find.

wow, thanks for all the quick responses! had no idea you weren't meant to put them in a seat before 12 months - I live in Oxford and see wee ones being cycled around all the time. I'll read more into it, thanks.

we have seat that is ok from 9mths it can recline, i got it from a specialist bike shop, we have a trailer as well that i used from 9mths, it said 12mths but my midddle two boys were walking by 9mths so figured they would be fine, you can get helmets to fit, we struggled to get one for 10mth old dd as she has a small head, but it was fine for the boys, again specialist bike shop.

Not wishing to start a debate, but just found a quote from a senior technical officer at the CTC saying:

"It's not so much a question of age, but of physical development. Infants vary a lot as to the age at which they are able to sit up unaided (as in sitting in the middle of the carpet, playing with toys etc), which is when they are ready to ride in the usual sort of bicycle child seat. Usually this is about nine months. And the length of your cycle ride between stops for some other activity should not exceed the length of time they are content to do that."

"That's typical childseats with an upright backrest. What happens if you ride too long with that design of seat is the child falls asleep and slumps forwards. This looks uncomfortable even if it does no harm and some infants find the motion so soporific that they nod off almost straight away! So we recommend seats with reclining backrests, especially for under-twos. With a reclining childseat set to it's most sloping adjustment, it becomes feasible to transport infants who've passed the somewhat earlier developmental milestone of sitting on the sofa for a while without falling over sideways ? or being propped with cushions to stop that happening! Usually this is achieved by six months."

"Since the seats inside cycle trailers have a more or less reclined backrest, a similar criterion applies, although it depends upon the amount of side support provided by the particular design of trailer in the almost inevitable event of the passenger falling asleep."

That was the first thing that popped up when I googled at what age babies can go in bike seats. Would be interested to read about those other studies. I really don't want to put him in the seat if it's not safe.

actually ours is more like this, i also have an ok baby front attaching bike seat, am selling it as it didnt fit very well on my crossbar. they are a good make tho, the okbaby ones :)

i think as long as you baby can sit up well and the seat reclines then from 9mths is fine, like said 2 of mine were walking at that age and perfectly fine in the seat or the trailer. i have just started putting dd who is 10mths in the bike seat now, it reclines if i want it to and she is very comfy and its very supportive. and you can get helmets. btw you can also get special seats like carseat to put in a trailer (providing it has the right straps) to put younger babies in trailers, so it can be done safely and is very common in holland :)

btw measure his head, my dd's is 42cm, if his head is 45cm or larger is should be fairly easy to find a helmet to fit, my dd however has a small head, so it was harder, she has a 'Bell' bike helmet :)

Thanks again! I'm going to talk to the bike shop people about it, but it's good to have a vague idea of what I want!

you can get them on amazon but you are best to go into a shop and try some on for a good fit, and also do the same with bike seats go to a specialised bike shop and have a look and see what will fit well on your bike and what your ds is comfortable, a good bike shop will be happy to help, my local one ordered in a particular seat so i could try it before i bought it :)
