Ok, cheating a bit putting this in aibu but hey! I wanted quick opinions as I am considering going this evening.

I can just about touch my toes. Will I make a massive fool of myself?

NO
everybody has to start somewhere
but try not to be competitive - there are some very flexible people
the sooner you start, the better your back will be in the long run

No you won't, but please try not to fart if I am behind you!

Silly girl. You go to Yoga classes to become flexible.
If you can already do all the bending then just save your money and buy a nice box of chocolates instead.

hairy I make no such promises...

Thanks everyone, I'm definitely going to go. It's body balance if that makes any difference!

LOVE Bodybalance
Its Yoga, pilates and Tai Chi all rolled into one.
The new release (54) only came out a couple of weeks ago so NOBODY will be expert.
The main thing to remember is that everything is repeated so panic not if the first time is a bit blech!

I have joints made of concrete and have just started going again after several years. It has loosened my hips and strengthened my core already (been going for about 5 weeks now) The first time will be hard but it is worth persisting. Go for it!

No idea about bodybalance but as far as yoga goes - go for your life! Other posters are completely correct: everybody has to start somewhere and some people are naturally much more flexible than others anyway. The point is to have fun and do something that benefits YOU. Even if you have a lycra-clad bendy wendy right next to you, you are doing just as well as her just by turning up and taking part.

I couldn't touch my toes at all after years of back problems and muscle stiffness. I can lie on my back, even though I do get a little stiff, as I hadn't been able to for years

Is it likely to be a mixed class?

Men on the whole tend to be fairly inflexible so in mixed classes I didn't have to worry about standing out too much. If you can touch your toes you're already better than me Smile

I love body balance.

no go, that's what it is for

You go into a position (as far as you comfortably can) but you try and perservere in that position, dpending what it is you might be letting gravity work on it for you for instance. With time, you get closer and closer to attaining the full position - touching the floor say. You align your body, get it into the correct position, as best you can judge it and let gravity or perservance in the position inch you along.
