Will probably post this on sport & exercise too - need opinions please!

Has anyone tried the Kettlercise Just for Women DVD? It sounds hideous I know, but I really want to do a Kettlebell class and there isn't one round here (ridiculous, but that's another thread).

If so, what weight did you start at? I'm considering buying a 6kg bell but suspect 4kg might be more realistic!

Hi Tarty.

I haven't seen the dvd but I do go to kettlebell classes. Well I hav only just started.

I am pretty weak atm but I use an 8Kg kettlebell for the swings. I would find it hard to use two 8Kgs at the same time (eg to do a clean or a clean and press ) so do one arm at a time.

I think a 4kg would be too light.

I'm not sure about what they do in the dvd but in my kettlebell class I only use one.
The class last for 45 mins and we do 3 groups of exercise and in each group there are 6 exercises that we do 6 times each.

Flippin' hard and my arse felt it the following day!!!

tarty do u do much resistance work? I've just done a kettlebell course and was using a 12Kg kettlebell for most of the moves. Some of the moves are easier if you use a heavier weight than you think you need (i.e the swing I could still do quite easily with 16kg). You can use much heavier weights than u would contemplate with barbells or dumbbells. If your gym has kettlebells then I would assume at least one of the instructors has some training in them and should be able to demonstrate some moves whilst u test which weight would be best for you.

I'm cancelling my gym membership to.save money and thought kettlebells might be a good way to keep my fitness up at home. There isn't a class locally so I've never done it before but am hearing good things about it. The kettlebells are pretty pricey though so if I need more than one weight it might not be a good idea.

Well before you cancel your gym membership go and play with their kettlebells, any bog standard chain gym should have kettlebells whether they have courses or not (my gym has kettlebells but doesn't do classes).

I do kettlebell workouts at home. I have an 8Kg one for windmill etc and 12kg one for swing. Personally I dont think you need two, I just do because I find the swing more effective with a heavier weight but I wouldnt be able to do some of the other exercises with a 12Kg IYSWIM?
I would recommend having someone from you local Gym show you the correct way to use a kettlebell, especially the swing as so many people do it wrong a cause themselves and injury but once you've got the hang of it you wont need the gym anymore.
I do my own kettlebell workout in the evening when the kids are in bed and I think they're fab!
