Brexit

I thought the whole point of Brexit was trade deals with the rest of the world

100k tariffs on African fair trade bananas, ruining suppliers. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-tariffs-bananas-africa-farmers-b1791225.html

I thought Brexit supporters said the EU were protectionist against Africa and the sunlit uplands would include lovely trade deals with majority world countries that helped people, rather than starving African farmers...

Wasn't the the 'we're not racist' argument?

I thought WTO terms were supposed to be no problem? It seems not.

I'm interested to see this because some leave voting members of my extended family members insisted that Brexit would somehow right injustices done by the EU to some African nations and developing markets. I wasn't convinced but didn't know enough about the subject to argue otherwise.

It was the antidote to the accusations of racism. If that antidote isn't there, it does rather seem that the racism remains.

The whole point of brexit was to make a small number of people a lot of money.

Brexit could have righted some of the supposed injustices done by the EU, if Johnson's Government had been prepared to negotiate properly and in a timely fashion. But how likely was it with a Government which has scrapped DfID and reduced their commitment to overseas aid? Do they look like people who want to support 'smiling piccaninnies with watermelon smiles'?

Yes, of course, because it is bloody obvious that every single country in the world is dying to give better trade deals to a country of 60m people than to a bloc of 450m people.

It is funny after a fashion, this was one of the bigger lies. I repeatedly asked people to give me a list of the countries and goods they wanted that could not already be traded through the EU. Response was predictably always the same - ...

Another evergreen is: "so, which EU laws do you want to get rid of and why?"

The answer is always a deafening silence! It would be funny if it weren't tragic.

Tell your relatives that the divorce bill with the EU has just been finalised - £37 BILLION. So there you go, well done to anyone who voted for it, we're £37 billion poorer and no ability to retire to Spain. We really taught those Europeans!!

Not to worry Polkadots, it's only us plebs who will pay the bill with more austerity and a wrecked NHS. The Leading Brexiters will make sure that they buy a passport to somewhere else.
