Yes, from 1st Februrary we will no longer be EU citizens, but during the 11 month transition period we will retain the right to work, study and retire in the EU.

And then it changes.

Are our EU passports still valid? I didn't get a new one after getting married because I didn't want one of the non EU ones.

No travel plans at the moment but am wondering. Thanks.

Your passport is still valid and nothing changes in the transition period, but we are not members of the EU and having a UK passport with EU on it won’t give you magical rights that people without EU on their UK passport don’t have.

Am still waiting for government to say they'll have to be replaced early (at our cost) if they have EU on them.

And then it changes unless Boris does a u-turn on transition, or agrees some sort of BRINO to make it all go away. Who knows. This time next year we could all be eating our stockpiles, or it could just be the same.

Thanks yes I was just worrying that it would be invalid because we're not going to be EU citizens anymore. Don't want to jeopardise any future travel. A colleague just got a new passport and his doesn't have European Union on it.

I don't know what will happen at work and applying for grants etc. I live in Italy and it comes up quite a lot that you have to state whether you are an EU citizen or not so even if lots of things wont change yet, it will put me at a disadvantage.

Won't happen.
International passport rules are that once issued they are as they are - see Balkan Country boundary changes

Yup, significantly. Make sure you have your Italian registration papers tickety boo

dont have to declare it, but I'm sure blow job will make some embarrassing declaration nonetheless. It will jeopardise your travel in future unfortunately. DK employer has sent an email reminding us that visiting Brit colleagues and PhD students after xmas will now need to obtain work visas and said it will take significant time and money so don't make plans without this consideratios. reminding us also that we are not able to apply for EU research grants reserves for EU citizens (of course).

on 1 Feb 2020, Which passport Q would I use entering France from UK? (as holder of Brit passport)

you use the passport that gets you through the queue quickest

and the same going the other way

as they never link up the records

Dunno. It's almost like this was not properly planned 🤔

Also, I think that it will no longer be the EU27. Those 27 countries will henceforth comprise the EU in it's entirety.

You're still allowed in the EU only queue until the end of the year. Nothing changes in practical terms until after December.

By sheer luck of where my mum is from I have an EU passport (and British and another one). It seems very unfair that people with just British passports won’t have the same rights and there’ll be some uncertainty for a bit longer :-(

It's what they voted for.

We don't know that yet. And before the March 2019 deadline the EU agreed that British citizens would not need visas for up to 90 day stays, including business.

Yes we'll have a nasty two tier system, although some things are based on residency. That said, there was someone bringing a case about being able to lose EU citizenship and it was thrown out because the court said it was too early. It may be resurrected, in which case, there's still some hope.

Quite often there isn't an EU queue, everyone queues up together because the UK isn't in Schengen anyway.

Nonsense. In UK airports there's an EU queue and a non-EU queue. The EU queue is a cursory check that the person has a passport or ID card. The non EU queue mostly need a stamp in their passports.

No change, no need to replace your passport until it is normally due for renewal. Passports issued during the transition period will still be marron but will only state UK passport and no longer refer to the EU. After Dec. 31st may be the blue ones also after Des 31st there will be no need for visas to travel to the EU if staying under 90 days.
EU queue until Dec. 31st.

My husband voted leave and so did his Irish father. I voted remain. Father in law had a row with me about it.

My father in law has since passed away, husband has obtained an Irish passport and my children are doing the same.

How ironic that I’ll be the only one having to queue in the non EU lane

Report
Dutch1e · 31/01/2020 13:28

Daffodil101 it's not much comfort but if you travel with your Irish husband after Christmas you can use the EU queue as your FoM rights will apply forever as the spouse of an EU citizen.

Pollaidh · 31/01/2020 13:34

@Dutch1e that's interesting, hadn't heard that. Where did you get that from please?
