Boris and the Backstop

Why is there not more outrage in the UK over Boris and his governments demand to throw out the Backstop?

I find it absolutely sickening that he is so determined to be free to walk away from the international peace treaty the UK signed to PROTECT ITS OWN PEOPLE. And he is fully prepared to risk the British economy and stability for years to come in order to be allowed to do this.

If it was so easy to come up with "Alternative Arrangements", then why has nobody in the past three years been able to come up with something that actually exists and is credible?
It's not easy. It will take years to sort out - which is why the backstop is so vital.

I see him again today on BBC talking about how the EU needs 'see reason' when what he wants is so beyond reason, it beggers belief. He is so arrogant he actually seems to think this is possible. I find the whole attitude repulsive.

Yes, repulsive is the word.

Same re the pronouncements on freedom of movement.

Can't recall despising a British government so much as this one, and I lived through Thatcherism as a young person.

He’s an idiot.

All this talk of telling the EU “we need a new agreement”.

Clearly he isn’t going to be able to get this ....

And to think he might chuck away the peace process in some spectacular silly waving contest is deplorable. The man is an arsehole.

He might be clever but he has no human feeling beyond his own sexual urges to fornicate his way round various women aides and assistants.

He won’t be able to deliver Brexit successfully any more than TM could.

And likewise I have never despised a Government as much as I do this one
Frankly I think the EU have my interests more at heart than this load of wankpuffins.

And I thought the Backstop only came into effect if they weren’t able to sort out alternative arrangements. If they’re that confident about alternative arrangements then the Backstop is a non-issue.

As for why people are not up in arms about this....

Most Leavers couldn’t give a shit about the people of Ireland and the deaths which might occur as a result as king as they get their No Deal Brexit which they definitely voted for at the time despite all the info telling them we’d leave with “the easiest deal in history”.

Most Leavers saying they knew it would be No Deal are bare faced liars,

He's a total bastard and the people who still spout this stuff about not needing a backstop or something concrete that protects GFA are also bastards.

Listening to Peter Bone this morning on Sky News, even if the EU were to remove the Backstop not going to happen anyway Wink, he was still saying that he (and by extension the ERG) still wouldn't vote for the WA as there was so much else in it that he/they didn't like Hmm

noblegiraffe · 21/08/2019 13:32

The Brexit Party paid to have this promoted into people’s twitter timelines.

I mean, they’ve got a fair point because the WA agreement is shit, but Remainers need to get their act together and start doing their own propaganda for the sunlit uplands of Remain, otherwise even if BJ is forced into a general election, he’s going to get massively elected and handed a mandate for No Deal.

Horrified by the insistence on dropping the backstop (although I'm not British).

Also horrified by the suggestion in today's Sun that Boris and co's plan for alternative arrangements is that Ireland leave the EU's regulatory regime and have regulatory alignment with the UK. Hard to know where to start with that one...

NI is a special economic area/Border in the Sea.
I'll take that. But No Dealers can go fuck themselves if they want Remain voters like me to "get behind" them.

Why is there not more outrage in the UK over Boris and his governments demand to throw out the Backstop?

Most likely answer to that is;

NI is about 2.5% of UK population. Maybe the remaining 97.5% are not bothered as they will not be affected by a hard border on the island of Ireland. The phrase

"I am alright Jack*

Comes to mind.

I think Ireland's answer to Johnson's proposal will be Go F*ck yourself.

HMArsey · 21/08/2019 15:15

Presumably it's only the DUP who are against the idea of a special economic area or border in the sea, can't see much of the rest of the UK being that bothered.

Irelands answer to Johnson's proposal will definitely be Go F*ck yourself. Ireland does not want a No Deal Brexit- it will be greatly harmed by it. But it's not prepared to throw out the GFA for it.

I just find it shocking that most of the population in the UK really don't seem to care. The strongest feeling on it seems to be boredom. There was far more outrage over the woman who put the cat in a wheelie bin (not that I condone putting cats in wheelie bins).

@MindyStClaire I agree.
@HMArsey , I hope the DUP will soon discover how little of a shit Johnson and the Tories actually give about them- Tory historic link is with UUP not DUP- and their creationist shit stirring bollocks.
If a majority of people in NI voted Remain, that had to include people from the Unionist community. Who presumably value the fragile peace and prosperity brought by GFA over batshittery. I think Johnson is spaffing out this shit to destroy the Brexit Party and then he will "come up with " a renamed NI only backstop that must be Brexit-y because he has said it is. That would be agreed by the EU and would probably get through Parliament. Then the No Dealers would need to find something else to wank about.

I'm seriousy hoping the people of NI will re-evaluate the consequences of their electing the Paisleyite handmaidens of the coming apocalypse and the I-Ran-Aways of Sinn Fein who sat back on their abstentionist arses and let it all happen.

Other parties are available.

So Angela Merkel has essentially given BJ 30 days to come up with alternative arrangements? That noone has been able to come up with in 3 years? I think she has just given him rope to hang himself on. He cant then turn around on Brexit Day pointing the finger at thw EU saying it's your fault.

I think he will go for a NI only backstop in the end and fuck over the DUP.

Completely in agreement with other posters, but I would note that Conservative popularity ratings are higher than they have been for years. Sadly many voters don't give a shit about anyone but themselves.

@MockersthefeMANist I was pondering this also, surely the more moderate voters on both sides, should now maybe thinking about voting for other parties, especially as the majority of NI voted remain yet are being represented by the DUP who would dearly love for the GFA to be well & truly scuppered.
Yy though it’s does appear I’m all right jack mentality by many on the mainland, also find it extremely frightening that the conservatives popularity ratings are so high.

Merkel has given Johnson 30 days to produce a workable solution. Blame, if any, will revolve about what is considered workable and what is not.

Same happened with what was considered a good or a bad deal when May was PM. Some MPs thought the WA was a good deal. Others, after reading the legal advice from Cox, thought it was a bad deal as UK could be locked into the CU and SM forever.

If after 30 days a solution is not agreed between both Germany and UK, Johnson's get out will be;

"we presented many solutions that were workable, but Germany did not like any of them"
