Planning a trip (by air) to Italy on 31st Oct staying 3 days - madness?

I wouldn't. Sorry.

No definitely not. We just don't know what the impact is going to be and I hate travelling at the best of times and so wouldn't want to risk the journey being horrendous at both ends.

TheresWaldo · 20/08/2019 08:46

I wouldn't either unless you are happy to lose the money.

Don't know.
There was a date set in March, and that came and went.
I'd probably see if I could rearrange it just in case.
Sorry.

We had booked to be away over 31st March and I wasn't too worried about that as all the signs were that it would be delayed, but I'm getting less of a sense of that with this deadline and I'd avoid traveling around the dates to be on the safe side - sorry.

Oh actually though is it 1st November it comes into force if it happens? In which case I might take a punt and go for it. If it does happen airports will be carnage for the first couple of days, but then they're going to have to put something in place.

If your party are all UK citizens who can afford to get yourselves back independently, no matter the cost or timeframe, then go for it.

Coming home will be a nightmare

No worries. Brexit isn’t going to affect the U.K. border as we were never in Schengen.
Just make sure you have popped to post office to get international drivers permit before going.
Make sure you have travel insurance and EHIC (EHIC is independent from EU and will still be in effect)
Get your euros soonish because they’ll cost more after Brexit.

I would go, the European Commission has assured passengers that even if we leave with no deal flights will still go ahead from UK to the EU, and the UK government have assured the same.

Mamamia456 · 20/08/2019 09:24

Meant to say UK government have assured there will be flights from EU to UK.

Thereswaldo - Why would they lose their money?

We decided not to. We have just changed our plans as we were due to travel back from France on November 1st but are now coming home a day earlier. The chances are everything will be fine but for the sake of a day we really didn't want to take the risk that we would be waiting for hours trying to get back into the country.

I'd go.

Why?

  1. Don't think Brexit will happen this year.
  2. If it does you might be better off elsewhere
  3. Your outward travel date should be OK.

But

  1. Only if all party members are certain of their right to re-enter the U.K.
  2. Get bullet proof insurance for medical cover (assuming no EHIC) and for potential delays on your return
  3. Make sure all members of the party could in the worst case scenario be absent for longer than 3 days without risking their job or safety

I didn't know that EHIC cards are independent of the EU - that is good news.

EHIC is independent from EU and will still be in effec

This is surely wrong.

Report
Leapyearlover · 20/08/2019 09:36

Yes. The Dept of Health says EHIC will be invalid if there is no deal.

Wouldn't rely on EHIC for anything anyway, we've always had travel insurance when we go away as even if it did cover you would be for medical care only and not any travel arrangements that would need to be altered.

I am no brexiteer, but it's in nobody's interests to stop the tourist industry in Europe, therefore I expect that there will probably be long delays in getting in and out for the first few days after a no deal brexit if it occurs, but after that it will be business as usual, perhaps with an extra form to fill in.

I'd go because you can claim asylum and stay at your destination if there is no deal Grin

There are limited plans in place to keep flights going. Do you know if your return flight was on the 2018 timetable (I have no idea how you find this out)? If so, it will go. If not, it won't.

I am not going anywhere in October half term this year, such a pain that my area has that week as half term, rather than the week before.

Thanks! It's not actually me that's going as I live in Italy but a group of friends are planning on visiting me. I don't want the trip to be a disaster or they'll never want to come again!!

We don't fly back home (from usa) until the 2nd november. Let's hope we can actually get home...

The government are stating the EHIC might not be valid anymore. Basically, they don't know.

Which shows just how utterly shite no deal planning is.

I'll be in Ireland with family on 31 October. Already getting Euros in and will get travel health insurance cover. But I would have done this anyway.

Buy a one way ticket and don't expect to ever be able to enter the country again Grin. After 1st November nothing is coming in or out of the country Grin.

Personally I would be avoiding airports until things settle down. There are bound to be delays as officials come to terms with new rules etc.
