I've not been on here for a while.

I'm seeing only anti Brexit threads on here.

Any Leave voters out there?

What do we have to look forward to when we Brexit?

These threads have been done time and again.

A fair few Leavers but non who can articulate the benefits of leaving.

And the post above tells you why Leavers generally don't engage. Most of us left that kind of response behind when we left the playground.

I was, of course, referring to Smiled.

So were you leave voting no deal or assuming a deal. Given now likely to be no deal are you still keen on leave? Am aware there are some arguments for leave. But I have a good Spanish friend who is one of 2
Million who haven’t yet applied for settled status because the deadline is December 2020. No deal government is now saying that free movement ends from 1 November which leaves her in impossible position if she needs to go home to see her family because no way of distinguishing her and someone who has never lived here. Genuinely interested in Your reaction to this as a leave voter

@SingingLily what are you looking forward to when we leave? Does yellow hammer worry you?

Operation Yellowhammer is a contingency plan, OP, and as a former senior civil servant, I know all about contingency planning - indeed, I wrote a fair slew of them. It doesn't faze me at all.

What I am looking forward to is restoration of self-determination - laws made in the UK by the UK for the UK. That's why I voted Leave. Nothing to do with immigration, which doesn't bother me.

SistemaAddict · 19/08/2019 18:14

What laws have the rest of the EU forced upon us? I hear this a fair bit about laws but I've not heard anyone quite any of them.

Report
SacrebleuLondres · 19/08/2019 18:14

Interesting.

You don't believe any of what is described in Yellowhammer will happen? Why are you not concerned?

What laws do you look forward to getting rid of that have come from Brussels (as Directives) and been passed into U.K. statutes?

Sacrebleu there’s a thread about half way down the Brexit topic headed ‘Please can someone tell me the upsides of Brexit.’
Maybe have a look at that?

Thanks @Dapplegrey

Is there a date and time I can use as an index?

Around 8% of laws are EU derived, they're not 'forced on us' as we're part of the law making process and have a say in them.

They're mostly common sense things. We'll have to follow the rules anyway in order to sell into the EU as factories won't want to make two specifications etc.

Brexit is about foisting other grievances onto the EU, meanwhile the people bankrolling it want to use it to continue/expand tax evasion. It's sickening how dumb leave supporters are. You're getting a turd wrapped in velvet and pretending it's a precious crown.

I’ll save you some time OP - there’s no point in looking at that thread as there were no upsides listed!

Cyclemad ! Goodness the anger coming from you, read up about the decline of the EU and you will understand where the rest of us leavers are coming from, there is so so much that is wrong with the EU

The tampon tax is a prime example, OP. When the UK entered the then-ECM in 1972, VAT bands were frozen. At that time, sanpro was VAT-rated while razors were zero-rated. This was because razors were considered essentials and sanpro was considered a luxury. I know, I know. Men were considered not to have any choice about shaving while women were thought to have had a choice about using sanpro. 🙄 Well, it was 1972 and women's voices were rarely heard or listened to then.

Since then, the inequality is well-recognised but the relevant EU directive prevented the UK from changing the rating. When we leave, we can change it. It's a small example but an obvious one. By the same token, utilities such as gas and electricity are also VAT-rated...presumably because hot water and winter heating are luxuries.

As far as contingency planning is concerned, the object is to identify what might happen and work out plans for dealing with it if it happens. Despite the reports in much of the media, the Civil Service is not only meticulous at contingency planning but no-deal planning is much more advanced than you might think.

I can't go into details, obviously, but I know Yellowhammer for what it is. A plan to deal with the ifs and maybes. We will cope.

I'm confused. The VAT rating in the UK for women's sanitary products is currently zero (www.gov.uk/government/publications/vat-zero-rating-of-womens-sanitary-products/vat-zero-rating-of-womens-sanitary-products).

Which was the Directive that forbade changing it or that applies specifically to tampons? Note the link specifically lists tampons as zero rated ...

Gas is rated at a reduced rate of 5% like food. Is there a Directive you can point to that prevents the UK from changing it to zero rated? Do you think it should be zero rated?

Yellowhammer is described as a CONOP - a CONCEPT OF OPERATIONS. It is the actual plan in case of No Deal. suppose it is a contingency in case No Deal happens. Is that what you mean?

Even when we can set our own VAT rates, we still need the income it generates so it’s not just going to disappear.

This is a perfect example of Leavers ideology - they only think about things they’d like to happen and don’t consider for a second the consequences.

SacrebleuLondres · 19/08/2019 19:42

@SingingLily

The page states:

"The Prime Minister secured agreement with his European counterparts at the March European Council to welcome the intention of the Commission to enable increased flexibility for member states with respect to zero and reduced rates of VAT."

It is waiting for Royal Assent - see below. Thus the EU has not prevented this from happening. It appears HMG is sitting on its implementation, but you are technically correct.

I suppose I'm still unclear where the EU comes into all this as an obstructive element when this could have come into operation since 2016 and HMG has done nothing to implement it?

What are we missing?

Operative date
The legislation will come into force on a day appointed by HM Treasury regulations. The Government intends to make these regulations as soon as possible following Royal Assent.
