Seven decades of prosperity have lulled the UK into thinking we’re special – that disasters only happen to other people

This article pretty much sums up how I feel about Brexit. I hope that someone can stop this madness yet. This is not a fun time to be expecting a baby not knowing what life she's going to be born into in January sad

But the government will avert a downturn with Keynesian economic stimulus.

Eg:

Jason118 Sun 18-Aug-19 10:31:36

Excellent news on infrastructure - I'm happy for the tax increase to pay for it too!

jasjas1973 Sun 18-Aug-19 10:37:10

These will take decades to come to fruition as land is bought, planning application, appeals and legal challenges go through before any work actually starts.

Brexit however will hit society instantly.

If spending one's way out of economic problems was so simple, every country since the year dot would do it & should brexit be this impending disaster, no one will lend us the money or not at rates we can afford.

Jason118 Sun 18-Aug-19 13:16:34

Yes but it will be fiiinesmilesmile

MoggyP Sun 18-Aug-19 13:23:10

Surely it shouid be 40 years, not 70?

The need for an IMF bailout for Britain occurred in the 1970s

flouncyfanny Sun 18-Aug-19 13:33:30

We borrowed money from the US after WW2.
We finished paying off that loan under Tony Blairs government.

Mistigri Sun 18-Aug-19 15:30:37

This is assuming that it doesn't have its hands full fire-fighting. Infrastructure building is a long term commitment not a short term solution to a disaster.

bellinisurge Sun 18-Aug-19 16:02:09

Interesting that Leavers pick and chose bits of socialist economic principles and , at the same time, argue we must run away very fast from them. Keynesian principles are socialism- ask any American.

Oranginna Sun 18-Aug-19 16:15:03

Leavers come from all along the political spectrum.

bellinisurge Sun 18-Aug-19 16:18:34

I know they do. And yet they all want to fix any problems by massive government investment and expenditure. It's pathetic really. Anything to try and keep people on board. Saying it's "British money" rather than EU money sounds more Brexit-yo

Camomila Sun 18-Aug-19 17:43:18

I'm also due in January Moomin I had a difficult birth last time so it's a nice extra worry to have in the back of my head...that the hospital might be understaffed/have drug shortages etc.

Totally agree op. The complacency, particularly among the well-off groups, has always been staggering. Not just about Brexit: about the inequality, about crime levels in Britain, about the lives so many of their own people have to live here.

I am also put in mind today of the collective guilt Germany assumes, and how many times people have asked how they could let things go so far and all that happen. Now we know. There is nothing those of us who never wanted this to happen can do to stop it.

Peregrina Sun 18-Aug-19 19:58:16

My feeling exactly DarkAtEndOfUK.

I always wondered how an educated and cultured population could sink to barbarism, and as you say now we know. I suspect that the way I feel now, of "I don't like what I see happening, but there seems to be little I can do to stop it" must be how many Germans felt in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

ConorMcGregorsChin Sun 18-Aug-19 20:25:33

Waiting with bated breath for an eloquent / educated / knowledged argument from the Leave side.

Try google - you know you won't get any answers on MN now that it has become an echo chamber.

That is if you want to know, not just point and mock.

pollyannaperspective Mon 19-Aug-19 16:40:21

Care to offer a link TrojanWhore?

Jason118 Mon 19-Aug-19 18:23:46

@TrojanWhore believe me I've looked using google and discussions in RL, in fact I stumbled onto MN during that very search. I've continued to look elsewhere, and I cannot find any upsides that are actually upsides rather than a display of personal prejudices. So, please do link away to provide me some more insight. They way things seem right now I could do with cheering up.

Maybe time you gave up then. grin

It all makes sense now.

bellinisurge Mon 19-Aug-19 20:17:04

Rather typical the whole "look fir yourself, I can't be bothered ". Like @Jason118 , I've looked. I've really looked. And still GFA responsibilities are stronger than anything I've seen.

On 1st November NI will become a smugglers' paradise. There is a misconception that NI terrorists sit on their arses all day coming out every now and then to do a shooting or a bombing. That's wrong, they are always present and active doing other stuff like extortion, drug dealing, pimping and smuggling. They are eagerly awaiting Brexit.

A border will have to appear pretty sharpish.

The "bumps in the road" are going to hit this current generation hard. Unless NI gets a massive economic boost from some sort of special status joining a paramilitary gang may become rather attractive.

BiL is a sheep farmer. No Deal will destroy him and many of our small farmers, so domestic food production is at risk.

It's a fucking dogs dinner.angry

Jason118 Mon 19-Aug-19 21:24:55

I know @tomtom1999xx is having a little joke and I'd normally join in, but this is so important to get right that if we can't find the benefits and those that supposedly 'know' what they are won't enlighten us, why the fuck are we doing this?

Yep, this is what a relative of mine said who works in an area that gives knowledge about such things. NI terrorists never really disappeared, they just became a sort of mafia.

Don't worry.
The best and finest from Eton are leading this.
It'll be just like the glory days of the Great British Empire.
Everything will be just spiffing.
Keep the British end up.

Or am I lying?
