Craziest reasons for wanting brexit

(109 Posts)

I've just been reading some of the comments attached to a bbc news article on brexit and found this gem:

"Remember the good old days when the postman would deliver your post in the morning and not the early afternoon?*
*
#Brexit #Iwanttogoback"

I remember those days well. In 1991 I had a long distance "boyfriend" and if I was really lucky I'd get his letter in the morning post before I got the bus to school at 7.20am. If it wasn't in the first post then it would come in the second post around 10.30am.
My post has just arrived this morning but my mum lives a mile up the road and hers tends to arrive in the afternoon.

Some people will blame the EU for anything!

What's the craziest reason for brexit you've heard or read?

Fish and chips wrapped in newspaper like in the good old days.

We can catch our own fish🤯
All the Muslims will go back home 🤯
We can go back to pounds and ounces🤯
We can get rid of all the foreign food and just have lovely English food🤯
These were all from my parents, I think I'm adopted....

Doorstep milk deliveries
The Black & White Minstrel Show
No Police intervention if it's only a 'domestic.'

Putting the grate back into Britain.

Some believed this flyer. They walk among us. 🙄

SistemaAddict Fri 09-Aug-19 20:45:14

Christ. I didn't see anything like that at the time. I wouldn't have believed a word of it anyway.

Norapalmer Fri 09-Aug-19 20:56:25

happycamper11 Fri 09-Aug-19 22:53:18

Most people I have spoken to or seen on sm think that it will prevent the (Syrian and African) refugees coming here and taking our homes and jobs grin

ListsWonderfulLists Fri 09-Aug-19 23:00:11

I know someone who voted leave because they were fed up of all the Gurkhas in their home town.... :-/

SistemaAddict Fri 09-Aug-19 23:01:47

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in these homes when the reality hits of what brexit means. Especially the racist Leavers if/when immigration increases from non-EU countries. It will be a smack in the face that's for sure. I just hope they keep their racist views to themselves and new comers aren't aware of how unwelcome they are to some.

If you want crazy, the Daily Mail comments on Brexit articles never fails to deliver.

Apparently the Q1 growth slump was because we were stockpiling for Brexit.

That just shows the logic we’re dealing with here.

LatteLove Fri 09-Aug-19 23:17:08

Wanting to bring back the death penalty and wanting less Muslims. confused

pamperramper Fri 09-Aug-19 23:35:09

That there would soon be only 1 football team for the whole of the EU, and the European League or whatever it is would have to be cancelled.

Bearbehind Fri 09-Aug-19 23:38:15

That should say Q2

SistemaAddict Fri 09-Aug-19 23:43:54

I went down the Fail comments rabbit hole and found this gem:

Snowflake Remoaners need to remember we survived the Blitz! Who cares about the economy, it will recover! Say it aloud, we are out and we are proud! Brexit means Brexit! Out NOW!

confused

It’s mind blowingly idiotic.

I simply can’t comprehend the stupidity and arrogance.

That’s why it has to be no dal and for us to be on our arses.

And even then it’s still going to be everyone’s fault but those who voted for it.

NameChangerOfTheNorth Fri 09-Aug-19 23:50:12

From a Brexit voter: To stop the muslims coming here (I did point out that most of Europe is Christian, but it was wasted on them)

In the interests of fairness, one person I know voted remain because they wanted the UK to be in Eurovision, so there was some stupidity on both sides.

NameChangerOfTheNorth Fri 09-Aug-19 23:52:43

we survived the Blitz
Most often said by those who were in fact, not born at that time and mostly had pretty nice lives in the new improved post war state.
Most people who were actually alive during WW2 voted to remain, IIRC.

Is immigration that much of an issue for people though really? I live in an area with quite a large Eastern European and Muslim population and can't say I've ever felt aggrieved by their presence. What is it that pisses people off so much? Is it just a case of inherent racism under the disguise of "taking all our jobs and service" (again never experienced this first hand or in fact know of anyone who has)

Mistigri Sat 10-Aug-19 00:08:35

I went down the Fail comments rabbit hole and found this gem:

To be fair to the Mail, I have read some equally stupid stuff on here.

AnxietyDream Sat 10-Aug-19 00:18:09

'The EU is sucking all the energy out of the UK' apparently.

TitsalinaBumSquash Sat 10-Aug-19 02:33:33

Because there are now 3 polish supermarkets in town - often posted on a local group for a nearby town to where I live. They're also the first to jump on any rape/burglary/assault police news bulletin to comment,
"What's his name? Bet it wasn't British..bet he was tanned..." angry

The same people who are deffo nor racist.

Graphista Sat 10-Aug-19 04:02:14

The ones I know that have stuck in my mind include

"So my boyfriends isn't watching and making me watch euro football"

"Because I don't like foreign food and I want to eat plain traditional British food"

"Because I hate European holidays"

Those last 2 especially er...who was making you?! Eat and holiday as you like!

NosyBe2006 Sat 10-Aug-19 04:48:40

Brussels not being elected and immigration seem to the most common reasons I hear from leave voters.
