Brexit

Please can someone tell me the upsides of Brexit

Apparently Dominic Raab has said there are many upsides of Brexit. The article in the Guardian that I read this in gave no details of what Raab (presumably) went on to say those upsides were.

Please can someone explain them to me?

Sorry that this seems like I am asking others to do my research for me but I really have been searching for upsides pf Brexit since 2016 and have found none so far.

Apparently rainbows and unicorns.
Oh, and a reunification of the island of Ireland, because that's not a hugely contentious issue. Angry

Death of the Tory party? They're fucked (as are we) whichever way this goes. If they don't deliver the hardest possible crash out Brexit they will never be forgiven. If they do deliver the hardest possible crash out Brexit they will never be forgiven.

@Screamqueenz yes, reunification. It is like the Tories/Brexiteers never read a newspaper pre- 1997.

I've been asking the same question for 3 years and not one brexiteer's been able to give me a positive answer that is just sound bites and slogans .

As I understand it two of the major advantages for the government are the ability to nationalise privately owned utilities without paying market value and to subsidise/bribe unprofitable manufacturing industry without falling foul of European competition law. I’d be slightly surprised if that’s what Raab means though. I suspect he may mean the ability to “offer more competitive terms to international business” - ie compete in a race to the bottom for corporation tax and regulations.

Finally closing the door for once and for all on British imperialism?

People have delusions about our place in the world, it's about to be rammed home pretty clearly that things have changed.

Getting our country back (where from, I have no idea)
Blue passports (so we can stand for hours in immigration staring at the pretty colour instead of skipping merrily through the blue channel).
£350m a week to the NHS (oops)

My leaver friend argues: reduced migration from EU leaves more space for increased migration from rest of world, and this is fairer for people in rest of world. That was reason enough for her to vote leave. She also is slightly swayed by the idea of their being too much distance between UK voter and European Parliament - things decided far away with your voice diluted.

(I am reporting this, not agreeing with it.)

Johnson has ditched the < 100k immigration target, right? So that's a good thing.

I think there's potential for ecological benefits in agriculture - the Common Agricultural Policy with its rules on set aside, etc. doesn't do much for wildlife/nature. And actually Gove was heading in the right direction on this whilst at DEFRA. Losing a lot of sheep in Wales and cows in NI /if/ it led to rewilding would be good, but if that happens as the result of thousands of farmers losing their livelihoods, it's a pretty dreadful way to get there, and there's absolutely no guarantee that this far right shower of shits wouldn't just prep the ground for disaster capitalists/their buddies to come in and buy up the land to play on.

That's the main actual potential positive I've been able to find though - reform of the CAP.

@lattelove - apparently we could have had blue passports anytime we liked while being in the EU.

The whole thing is a fucking shit show and we are the laughing stock of the EU if not the world.

I truly despair
