No deal Brexit - more prepared than we think?

I posted a thread on here recently about being terrified of a no deal Brexit. Since then I’ve felt a little bit reassured after reading this article about how Britain is preparing/prepared for a no deal. Sorry in advance for the Daily Mail link!

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7318477/So-does-No-Deal-Brexit-really-mean.html

It does sound like we’re more together than I’d thought (although I may just be wishful thinking, hopelessly naive, clutching at straws or all of the above!)

What are people’s thoughts?

I think nobody should be reassured by anything that is printed in the Daily Mail.

This.

The Mail is notoriously pro Brexit and is also well known for being "economical with the truth" when it suits.

I was going to engagé seriously with that article, because a lot of people are being falsely reassured by this sort of fake news, but it is so full of holes that it isn't worth the time. In fact it's so far from the truth that it's tempting to believe that the govt paid it!

Anything that refers to "mini deals" is deluded. The EU has put in place some unilateral and temporary provisions that are designed to reduce disruption on the EU side. Some of these end very soon unless they are extended (because they were put in place with a March Brexit in mind).

The mail isn't a realistic news source on Brexit, it's a propaganda outfit.

Very much less prepared that we think is more realistic I think.

I don't take the Daily Fail's word for it. I am slightly comforted by Gove being in charge of that. It needs someone anal with no social skills.

The country seems to be quite prepared, the aviation, transport, lorries and ports. All has been agreed. There will be big delays for a while with all the paperwork. I am so sick of brexit, I don't even care anymore.

I'm not reassured at all. Look at this link of our trade deals for post Brexit. Almost none are in place, most are still under discussion and we are not in a strong bargaining place.

Michael Gove’s wife writes for the Daily Mail. Dominic Cummings has been threatening politicians and political advisors saying that everyone has to put on a happy face about the prospect of a no-deal Brexit had has said that anyone leaking the truth about no-deal to journalists will be found out.

So expect lots of (fake) enthusiasm for No Deal in the coming months. It’s part of a calculated madman act because apparently if the EU thinks we are up for No Deal, they will roll over on the backstop (they won’t).

Goodness know who wrote or researched that artical but if you are interested in facts then yesterday's Today Programme on Radio 4 was devoted to this and had a range of experts in many fields giving their opinion on the specific effects of a no deal and Brexit in general.

The BBC are biaised against Brexit though, so I would take as much notice of them as I would the Daily Mail.

Ah well I suspect that means they are doing their job properly as a lot of people think they are biased in favour of it (always having Farage on Question TIme and never a Europhile MEP for example).

Since when??

Not much has been agreed and no one knows what's going on or going to happen.

Stop reading the Fail.

I was reading yesterday - and it'll either be the Guardian or BBC News App - about goods coming into the UK.
Apparently any ease of the flow of goods through Dover & UK ports will be more to do with the arrangements that have been made by EU countries, particularly France at Calais & Boulogne, than any preparations that we have made in the UK.
Certainly these EU countries have realised that Kent/Dover are limited in space so have been busy for the past year making preparations for border checks to take place on the EU side of the Channel.

I was appalled - all this bollocks of regaining sovereignty yet getting goods into the UK is dependant of foreword planning by the EU!
And we'll be parking lorries on motorways.

The country seems to be quite prepared

That big steel barrier partitioning the M20 is certainly a preparation, but not what I would call a positive. More a ‘We’re prepared for things to be totally shit’.

Like saying the Titanic was prepared for the iceberg because it had a few lifejackets on board.

The port of Dover has been working with the government for the past 18 months in preparation for the event of a no deal Brexit and have said they are prepared for the 31st October.

I literally spurted my coffee out reading that comment. Is that you, John Humphries?

@Mamamia456 did you listen to the interviews with people like Sir Paul Nurse and Justin King who are independent experts in their fields, expressing their opinions based upon their own extensive professional knowledge?

Do you have a source? Because if you are going to make sweeping statements like that it is generally considered good manners to back it up.

Is that the same Gove who said
"I think the people in this country have had enough of experts..."

I wouldn't be putting my trust in him to feed a hamster.

Take your point @campion . My point is that, of the idiots in that group, he's the least incompetent. Like a 12 year old rather than a 5 year old being put in charge of a burning building Confused
