Netflix documentary about Cambridge Analytica. It explores the dark side of data.

Listening which Cumberbatch one? The one about referendum campaign?

The Great Hack also showed how data manipulation were done in other countries such as the "Do So" campaign in Trinidad and Tobago

It's pretty comprehensive. Obviously, all Leave voters will say 'Not me, I made up my own mind.Grin I've always wanted to throw the country of a cliff taking everyone with me.' If people refuse to see it, what can you do? Nobody wants to admit they got taken for a sucker.

Just watched it and coincidentally I have just deactivated my Facebook account! Really thought provoking!

I haven't watched the Netflix documentary but I have watched the Carole Cadwalladr TED talk (the Analytica/Facebook expose journalist).

She displayed several Facebook posters from the referendum, one had a banner, 'The EU will open membership talks with Turkey on 30 June' (a week after the 2016 vote). She told the audience quite passionately that ..."There is not even any discussions about Turkey joining the EU" and it's "all a total lie."

  • said with the benefit of hindsight.

I checked the BBC news for 30th June 2016 - and sure enough there was a report;

30 Jun 2016 EU opens new phase in Turkey membership bid talks
"The EU has opened a new chapter in Turkey's EU membership talks, covering budget contributions to the bloc."

"By moving on with the negotiations the EU is delivering on a pledge it made to Turkey in March, said Slovakia - the country now set to manage EU affairs."

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-36672242

I also checked the EU Commission website;

29/11/2015 The EU and Turkey agreed to re-energise Turkey's accession process to the European Union.

"High-level dialogue between both parties will be reinforced through more frequent and structured meetings including the organisation of summits twice a year."

www.consilium.europa.eu/en/meetings/international-summit/2015/11/29/

Brussels, 4 May 2016
European Commission opens way for decision by June on visa-free travel for citizens of Turkey

"First Vice-President Frans Timmermans said: "Turkey has made impressive progress, particularly in recent weeks, on meeting the benchmarks of its visa liberalisation roadmap."

europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-16-1622_en.htm

And yet Carole Cadwalladr wants her audience to think that Turkey membership talks in 2015/16 were a "total lie".

(And yes, I know that it might have taken Turkey 10-15 years to join the EU - but we are 3 years down the line now.)

Unfortunately for Turkey they had an attempted coup on 15th July 2016 and things went downhill from there.

Well in that case Clavinova, I'll be sure to disregard the whole documentary which you haven't seen. Very helpful cut and paste as usual. Turkey EU discussions ceased in 2016. In 2017, EU officials noted Turkish policies violate the Copenhagen criteria for membership.

Although the EU now have delicate negotiations with Turkey over the visa-free travel they were promised in 2016 - report from 3 days ago;

"Turkey Threatens to Suspend EU Migrant Deal Due to Lack of Visa-free Travel to EU."

They could open talks with North Korea. But until the country with whom they are negotiating meets certain standards they won't be able to apply to join.
As we will soon find, being a country bordering the EU brings challenges and you need to talk to your neighbours about things that affect you both.

Yeah, heard about Aaron Banks planning to sue Netflix even without seeing the documentary.
