Looking for some lighter brexit relief by fellow leavers... Every thread I've glanced at seems to be dominated by renainers?

Is there any space for leaver on here?

Just interested... I wanted to chat...

No, there is no space for leavers on here.

MN is also a place where ideas and beliefs are challenged and scrutinised. The “Leave” hasn’t really held up well to challenge or scrutiny as various posters have shown.

In my view, it’s an emotionally driven and self-destructive position driven by an misapprehension of Britain’s power and the basic principles of international relations in the 21st century.

In trying to gain power and freedom from leaving the EU, we’ll only achieve the opposite as we move from being a key player in a global trading bloc to being a minnow entirely at the mercy of Trump and Jinping, unable even to exercise the freedom choosing our Ambassadors out of a terror of being frozen out.

I’d welcome someone arguing a coherent position to the contrary as I’d love to be persuaded that Brexit was a good thing given where we are in this process.... I’m all ears!

‘I don’t have to explain my reasons’

‘I am sick of being branded thick’

‘Mn is full of remoaners’

Well I voted leave. My reasons for doing so still stand. But even I have determined that we should actually remain if offered the opportunity to vote again. We have tried to implement leave and have been unable to do so in a way that isn't fairly quickly wrecking our country, our politics and many relationships. I'm light of that I think we should draw a line under it and look at ways to repair what has been fractured. Both what was going wrong enough to cause this in the first place and what has happened since the vote.

I'd love to hear some lighter Brexit chat, I'm a remainer but am now actively trying to make peace with Brexit and to find the positives. So I'd enjoy a positive pro Brexit chat with an open mind. A few people have tried to start a " what's good about Brexit?" Chat. Remainers do tend to pile on, yes but also (with a few notable exceptions) leavers tend to be quiet and on here.

I've said on a previous thread. My big hope for Brexit is that we become more environmentally friendly. We grow more here instead of importing and buy British/in season goods more regularly. I think that's all I have...... what are you looking forward to OP?

I'd love to be smarter, lighter, more dynamic, better dressed. And it's all your responsibility to make it so. Maybe I will give up chocolate for a bit because that is obviously the only reason I am not those things.
It kind of goes like that, op. And probably will in this thread.

Good post MsMarvellous - that's exactly what Theresa May should have asked - what were the real reasons behind the vote, and to what extent can we put them right? Then if Brexit was still considered the desirable solution, draw up a realistic timetable for how to implement it.

So for example - exactly which trade deals do we want with the US and China? What are we prepared to give up to get these deals? Are we prepared to open up the NHS to American pharma as the price? As May and Johnson found when they went to India with great fanfare, the price of deals was more visas for Indians, and that price was too high for them. So they came back with considerably less fanfare and without the deal.

I am a Remainer Lite Wink. I think there are lots of justified criticisms of the EU and that it would have been better to stay as the original EEC, rather than introducing the Euro etc. And I strongly object to the characterisation of people who voted Leave as stupid or racist.

I am therefore genuinely open to debate and to hearing what people who still support Leave think will be the upsides of Brexit. Trouble is, I haven't heard anyone make a coherent argument for Brexit for at least a year. The only rationale now seems to be "We voted for it, so we have to do it".

What are your reasons for supporting Brexit now, OP?

{Leavers don’t talk on here because : }

Having bounded in in significant numbers proclaiming 'we won, get over it' none have successfully managed to say what they have won and how it will be 'better' than pre referendum.
Since even Boris can't actually say what will come after the UK leaves, and how it will be achieved it is obvious that it won't he that great after all.
The government should be guiding the UK for the next 30, 50, 80 years or more but they are still playing on the dodgems, going around in ever decreasing circles.

Mumsnet is a parenting website. Most members are therefore going to be younger women, usually with children, often in work.

This demographic is a remain demographic so it's no surprise that remainers dominate on here.

The leave demographic is on average older, often retired. Many older people don't use social media in the first place, and if they did they probably wouldn't choose a parenting website. It's not really surprising that they are in a minority on mumsnet.

'Mn is usually balanced...'

I really don't agree with you on that one.

But it's a useful bellwether - dominant opinion on MN has been the losing side in RL for years now.

And the reason that the winners don't post on here is because of the kind of insults that are already scattered on this post. The level of hostility from some posters is unedifying and has killed political debate on MN. And I really don't think they see it.

So we should be seeing 'this law could be improved by....'. The only person I have seen do that is my DB and he voted Remain.
Someone suggested we could change the VAT rates. VAT was an EU invention, so we could scrap it altogether and introduce some other purchase tax. I haven' seen any Leavers suggest this though.

Or since EU health care staff are leaving, but we have no shortage of people who want to study medicine, nursing and midwifery, the Government should be stuck into proposing a 25 year plan to bring us up to being as near self-sufficient in medical staff as possible. Instead, we will go back to doing what we did before - poach staff from the Commonwealth - most countries of which can hardly afford to lose their medical staff.

bellinisurge · 14/07/2019 08:16

Leavers stop posting on here generally because they don't like answering questions and then anyone who asks questions is a big meanie and doesn't believe and loves the EU and that's silly.

Report
Hoppinggreen · 14/07/2019 08:22

I think it’s because Leavers arguments tend to be about feelings and vague principles with no facts to back them up. Leavers can’t generally provide evidence to support their position so their arguments fall pretty flat when challenged.
Also The MN demographic is typically Remain

Report
Mayborn · 14/07/2019 08:31

Because if you’re going to debate on MN you will be challenged and their arguments largely haven’t held up to scrutiny (see also: public sphere).

Op:
Gransnet has a lot more leavers posting. So if you’re looking for a more balanced debate you might want to have a look over there?
True, it is mostly the 50+ age group, so you will get more leavers, but I’d say it’s 50/50 leave/ remain. On this brexit board it’s almost 99% remain so you’re never going to get a decent debate.

MNetters are on the whole parents and what we have seen so far is a whole list of things that leaving the EU will take away from our children, and us. Not one 'Leave' politician has said anything that will actually make our children's lives better now, or in the reasonable near future.
Why isn't money being spent NOW on NHS, Schools, training prospects for future employment?

Report
bellinisurge · 14/07/2019 09:00

@tomtom1999xx , there is a tendency to say all Leavers are over 50. I know as many under 50 as over 50. The very old and the very young (voting age) tend to be Remain.
If you can successfully explain how the GFA won't be screwed by No Deal, op, happy to chat. If you can't, don't expect an easy thread.

Because mumsnet like every other forum becomes an echo chamber. Because it's easier to justify your opinion to others that believe in it than to the opposite side. ‘I am sick of being branded thick’ this, this shuts down the conversation, never mind my two degrees and postgraduate qualification I'm clearly thick because I don't agree with you.

Because if you wrestle a pig you both end up covered in mud and the pig will enjoy it. I'very made my opinion known when it matters, if I have to do so again I will. But I don't have to argue with people I don't care about and whose opinion is as fixed as mine so I don't post in the Brexit topic
