Morning DG Wondered where you all were. Haven’t made it on to the Westminstenders threads lately (real life-DH-Parkinson’s woes taking precedence over Brexit woe atm). Good to see a familiar ‘face’ on an active thread.

Still a total shit-show I see?

I have been pondering what is politician's obsession with buses.

Don't get me wrong I like a bus journey now and then. I often use one for getting to work.Also my school run is a long walk and if I'm late I sometimes pop on a London bus if the traffic's flowing ok ...

But... Johnson's incomprehensible babblings about making models of buses, and the big red bus lie and now NFs bus.

I think that too many politicians see the electorate as this amorphous blob, far beneath them. We are seen as mostly travelling on buses, doffing our caps .. and the only vehicle ( pun intended) to relate to the hoi polloi is to use a bus.

It reminds me when as a child at the local comp one of the governors, a local Lady someone used to come and talk at our assembly. Even then I felt so patronised like we might be given out an orange or Lump of coal if we were lucky.

Politicians bus references come from the same mind set. It's " If stuck for words then just talk about buses, the people relate to them."

I support the environmental benefits of a bus but as at December 2018, there were 38.2 million vehicles licensed for use on UK roads. So why the bus obsession?

Buses are only 'environmentally efficient' in built up areas.
Working and shopping locally (hints of Royston Vasesey) are probably better for the environment.
The basic problem is the 'inefficiency' of traveling anywhere by any powered 'vehicle'.
Electric cars/buses are only shifting the pollution elsewhere, they are not significantly more or less unpolluting.

Yep, typos here too, must be a sunny weather thing!

Electric cars/buses are only shifting the pollution elsewhere,

But as my DB pointed out years ago (before emigrating) - it's a million times easier to deal with pollution from one source - say a Big Fuck Off Power Station - than it is a million different sources - e.g. individual cars.

However that doesn't fit the NeoLiberal agenda that everyone has to pay for themselves and centralised planning and spending are Evil.

{say a Big Fuck Off Power Station}

Yes, rebuild Battersea as a small nuclear power station. It has the river for cooling and it's proximity to the users is more efficient as the power generated won't be lost in long transmission lines.

Thank you lonelyplanet and leclerc. DH just cheerily announced it’s been over 24 hours since he last fell over. That is the benchmark of a good day now...

Just catching up on the Andrew Marr show. Len McClusky says we can avoid No Deal because there are enough sensible Conservative MPs to stop it. Has anyone during these conversations ever once pointed out they can’t stop it if we don’t revoke or sign the WA? Even Rory Stewart during the debates was demanding of the No Dealers ‘How? How will you deliver No Deal? There’s no majority for it’ and all I could think was ‘But how do we prevent it?’ Surely Rory Stewart understands how a PM could deliver No Deal either deliberately or by accident.

Should I watch the Jeremy Hunt interview? Not sure if my nerves can stand it.

From SKY
{Johnson rejects any responsibility for plight of Briton jailed in Iran }

As foreign secretary, PM or indeed anyone in 'governmental' roles, diplomacy and considered speech is ALL.
Not sure there are many left that can manage this now.
What you say and how you say it is all critical when dealing with any 'foreign' power.

Where is the 200 Billion coming from that Brexit Party is talking about?

Scrap HS2 = 100
Scrap Foreign Aid = 13
Scrap Brexit Divorce = 39
TOTAL = 152

Where is the other 48 coming from?

The UK does not get to 'scrap' the £39 Billion as it is payment for ongoing EU membership.
If the UK refused to pay, why would the USA/China/Japan/anywhere trust the UK for it's new trade deals?
The EU would also not commence any negotiations with the UK and even trough WTO rules, the EU has to be involved in any trade renegotiation, even if it leaves with no deal and refuses to speak with the EU ever again.

Hahaha.

Farage seems to be doing well turd or not. Topped the EU elections within weeks of forming the Brexit Party. Top, or in joint lead with Conservatives, in the opinion polls depending on which poll you read.

{ Topped the EU elections within weeks of forming the Brexit Party.}

No, The Brexit party is a 'rebranded' UKIP and follows on from a Eurosceptic 'company/organisation' he registered in 2014 in the EU.
Combined with 'suspicious' money and no real plans apart from being disruptive he would be a disaster in government.

And didn't win the Peterborough by election which his party should have walked.
