Brexit

Can we have a list of all the things we will be able to do once outside the E.U. that we can’t do now

With 11 weeks to go this should be easy but it’s clear from other threads that people still think things that have nothing to do with the E.U. will change when we leave.

Can we have a list of tangible positive things that can only happen by leaving.

We know it's not about facts.

Indeed, but once the facts become reality, feelings won’t change them.

'we' will be able to reduce Employee rights as these are an EU requirement, May is currently trying to convince Corbyn to vote in agreement with the WA by promising she wont decrease these rights. Presumably this means she will change them if he doesnt agree with her.

Say goodbye to: annual leave, maternity pay, childcare/dependants leave, statuatory redundancy, working time regulations......

  • reduce workers' rights
  • remove environmental protections
  • drastically reduce corporate taxation
  • water down food safety and animal welfare legislation
  • allow the sale of untested and unsafe products
  • remove consumer protections
  • do what you like with people's personal data

I'm sure there are more.

Stop worrying about poorer areas in the Uk typically outside London who are currently net beneficiaries of the EU.

Actually just thought of one benefit - only taken me two years!
VAT. rates were fixed when we joined the EEC in 73 and this has always been used as an excuse for not removing VAT on sanitary products. However, outside of the EU, we can chose what items go into a particular VAT category so now the government have no excuse not to remove VAT on sanpro.

Now I use a cup though, I'm not sure this is really worth leaving the EU for.

Not sure of exact legislation but individual countries set their own VAT rates but I think the max and min amounts are EU legislated presumably to reduce smuggling.

Report
Bearbehind · 13/01/2019 11:59

We could have changed the VAT rate on sanitary products without leaving too!

No I don't think so. When we joined, we said these products are in standard rate and these are luxury and these are zero. Whilst we can change what those rates are, it's my understanding, we can't change what group a product falls into.

Just had a quick search and EU sets minimum standard rate at 15% and we're allowed 2 lower rates.

There are VAT changes that the UK is allowed to make, but they need EU approval, which isn't readily forthcoming - it's usually a battle that takes many months to get their approval. There are some things they'd never agree to (specified in the legislation) but like I say some things can be negotiated. But the UK certainly doesn't have anything like any freedom to change anything without their consent.

We can make VAT changes.
We can manage immigration to suit our countries needs and the needs of genuine refugees.
We can nationalise our railways.
We can remove tariffs from imports.
Basically we can be a normal country like Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand that is in full charge of its own affairs.
We can do all this and still protect workers rights and the environment just as those countries do. There is this new project fear around that the alt right will be in charge if we Brexit. Nonsense. We will choose our government just as we always have.

milly did you not listen to any of the responses on the other thread?

That list is not dependent on leaving the EU with the exception of the tax / tariff points which is not a benefit if it leads to lower tax take with no replacement.

{We will choose our government just as we always have}
With a serious problem that none of them WANT to make serious inroads into the cause of Brexit, inequality, lack of investment and all the rest.
All of the things you have said were possible without leaving the EU, but now you are anticipating any government is suddenly going to do an 'about turn' when it could have done anytime since WW2 or prior?

Pay to travel to EU countries.
Stop people taking money out of the country.
Allow crops to rot in the fields because the people who normally do the job are not allowed in.
Have illegal immigrants walk over the Irish / NI boarder rather than trying to stop them at Calais.
Pay if we want to work or study in an EU country.
Need health insurance, not just an EU health card for holidays to Spain and France.

We certainly could protect employee rights etc, but we all know that a Conservative government won’t. The EU is the only thing stopping them.

Please tell me for example what is ‘opinion’ about being able to renationalise railways without leaving the EU?

It is a fact.

If we wanted to we could.
