Holiday plans

So folks. As chaos currently seems to reign and it's anybody's guess where the curtain drops...

What plans are people making for holidays in 2019? Or, more rather, where and where would you not feel comfortable booking? The idea of a year with no escape from this mad country we're trapped in does not feel me with joy...

Have ideas and wishes but not booking ANYTHING till I know the final deal

Same here. Would love to take our Camper to Northern Spain in March but currently dont dare. Im a remainer, but I doubt in the event of no deal and chaos, that the Spanish would understand the difference.

Im currently seeing some brexiteers on Facebook getting very very angry and using nasty language. Blaming everything, what a surprise, on remainers. When they realise they won't get what they want that could kick off here too.

Vegas in Jan.
Nothing else booked as I don't trust what is going on.

The world isn't going to stop, the airlines will still run, get your holidays booked.
It's ridiculous scare mongering. Anybody remember the millennium bug?

Bingo. Scaremongering and Y2K. Well done

If you say so Greggers. And unicorns will fart blue passports

I have a blue passport already thank you.
Fat lot of good it will do me if there is a No Parachute Brexit

Oh I remember the Millenium bug well. I made decent money for two years solid from 1998 solid working on fixing it. I was late on the scene at that. Would that the Government had spent one tenth of the time on Brexit - we might have begun to get somewhere sensible by now.

I for one can't afford to throw money away.

We’re due to go to our boat in April. We’ve sorted the dog out with rabies titre. We’ve book the shuttle which is only real expense that might be wasted. We’ve Irish passports so not an issue there. Well book a hotel near Ashford nearer the time to avoid lorry jams on M20 and reduce risk of missing train. Health insurance we do annually so we’ll be fine with that and the E111 doesn’t really impact too much.

That's exactly it, Peregrina....we can't afford to waste money either. It might all be ok, or it might not.

I know it sounds really petty and 3rd world problems but I struggle with depression and booking a holiday in advance is usually one of the things I use to keep looking ahead to in low periods...but don't feel safe to do that at the moment with everything as it is.

I wish we even knew a definite cut off point that we can start making plans from again. It seems this could just roll on.

It isn't the issue of flights being cancelled/more expensive I am worried about. It is massive job losses. Being unable to pay for our mortgage if we lose our jobs and therefore losing our home.

If you think the worse thing to happen after March is disruption to holiday plans then you are deluded. Unless you are very well off and have property to sell or lots of shares to cash in if you lose your jobs.

I've booked tickets to Spain on 10th April. I am 99% sure that there will be flights, I agree with Gromance that the danger for the UK is a recession as even a relatively soft Brexit hits the economy.

Report
BoyMeetsWorld · 29/11/2018 11:34

Gromance, totally agree...although personally I'm (Hopefully not naively) not too worried about jobs as both my DH and I have specifically chosen to stay put in jobs we would ideally have moved on and up from ages ago, precisely because we are both very secure in the roles we have and the companies we are in, in the event of Brexit and recession. Of course nobody can say what might happen. But that's the one area I'm not so scared about. It's very sound logic though.

And mortgages with interest increases, still terrifying...especially with the dreaded negative equity. If there's any way at all we can afford a holiday though we're jolly well having one.

We haven't booked anything for 29th March onwards and won't until a Brexit plan, or a plan to delay leaving the EU, or whatever the fuck is going to be decided, is. I'm certainly not booking anything for the Easter holidays.

I suspect though that a deal of some sort will be done to keep our ports and airports running as normal, since it benefits absolutely no one for anything else to be the case, and it would be a fucking catastrophe for our economy if nothing and no one can enter or leave after 29th March ...

I've booked to go abroad in May

Report
Hoppinggreen · 01/12/2018 17:25

I haven’t booked anything for after March yet. We have a property in another EU country and usually spend Easter there but I’m holding off booking flights for now.
I usually book a holiday for May/June around Feb but I don’t think I will
DH and DD’s hve dual nationality with another EU country so m not worried about Visas etc ( and only I would need one) but I am concerned about whether flights can go if there is no deal

Report
Talkinpeece · 01/12/2018 18:15

It is starting to look like "no deal" is incredibly unlikely.
Which is cool.
But my holiday money will stay in my bank account for now Smile
