I honestly couldn't think of a better starter to the thread than simply just this tweet

Robert Peston @ peston
We’ve got an official opposition tearing itself apart over antisemitism, the founder of the EDL running rings around the judiciary and a government negotiating a Brexit plan that its own MPs and ministers tell me is dead. When will we pull ourselves together, as a nation?

But don't worry, your blue passport will get you an extra special long wait at passport control. And no deal could lead to continued freedom of movement anyway. Something for everyone in there.

Thanks for the thread red and the link to the petition missS I signed it when it was in the 300,000. Great to see it’s been signed by over 500,000 now.

Great. Sorry to bang on about it. Nice to see you again quietrebel.

I think the reason i’m So obsessed with the petition is t feels like the only thing I can do to try to stop this mess. Want to be able to say I at least did something. Not sure what else to do- apart from hoard canned goods.

Also, have you all signed The Independent petition?

Impressive as it is, it's still only half the size the Jeremy Clarkson petition reached. And that didn't work (either Hmm)

I have signed and shared the petition too. Unless it gets about 16-17 million, I’m sure it will be ignored, though. The one immediately after the referendum had 4 million and was ignored.

My hope is that because it has the backing of a newspaper and cross party support that it’ll start to gain enough traction to be a rallying call for a second ref. I know the People’s Vote one is only up to around 300,000.

My brother said that he think TM is making a hash of it on purpose to try to kill off Brexit. I can only hope but I don’t have that much faith in her political skills are acumen to really believe it.

I see on other threads that a few cages have been rattled. Let's keep rattling them.

Cages have definitely been rattled. Just look at the screeds of content-free posts flooding all the Brexit threads lately.

"If you can't stop the signal increase the noise"

Just to quote again falcon’s succinct summary - and what we need to keep doing is comtinue sending the signals of information and data and links, and not amplifying the noise by engaging with it.

These threads are a beacon of sanity among the increasingly frantic astroturfing and sneering of Leave bots voters. Some of them appear to actually be going insane. Thanks red!

So the UK government may not enforce border controls post-Brexit... I think we should beware of calling this "free movement", since it won't, by itself, give EU nationals the right to remain in the UK and it certainly won't give UK citizens back their FOM in the EU. No more checks at the UK border means just no more checks at the border, no more and no less.

So apparently it doesn't matter if vote leave broke the law. Just got this email through.

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Rescind Art.50 if Vote Leave has broken Electoral Laws regarding 2016 referendum”.

Government responded:

The British people voted to leave the EU and the Government respects that decision. We have always been clear that as a matter of policy our notification under Article 50 will not be withdrawn.

The British people voted to leave the EU, and it is the duty of the Government to deliver on their instruction. There can be no attempt to stay in the EU.

The result of the referendum held on 23 June 2016 saw a majority of people vote to leave the European Union. This was the biggest democratic mandate for a course of action ever directed at any UK Government. Following this, Parliament authorised the Prime Minister to trigger Article 50, passing the EU (Notification of Withdrawal) Act.

In last year’s General Election, over 80% of people then voted for parties committing to respecting the result of the referendum. It was the stated policy of both major parties that the decision of the people would be respected. The Government is clear that it is now its duty to implement the will of the electorate.

This was not a decision made after just a few weeks of campaigning, but one that came after a debate that had taken place both in Parliament and across the country for decades.

We are committed to making a success of the British people’s decision to leave the European Union. And that is how we have always approached the negotiations - anticipating success, not failure. It is vital that we try to reach an agreement that builds a strong relationship between Britain and the EU as neighbours, allies and partners. Not just for those who voted to leave but for every citizen of the United Kingdom. We were given a national mandate and this Government is determined to deliver a deal in the national interest.

As the Prime Minister has said: “This is about more than the decision to leave the EU; it is about whether the public can trust their politicians to put in place the decision they took.” The British people can trust this Government to honour the referendum result and get the best deal possible. To do otherwise would be to undermine the decision of the British people. The premise that the people can trust their politicians to deliver on the promises they make and will deliver them in Parliament is fundamental to our democracy.

Our focus is making a success of Brexit and attempting to get the best deal possible. A deal that is in the interests of both the United Kingdom and the European Union. And one that takes in both economic and security cooperation.

It is the Government’s duty to deliver the will of the people and reach a desirable final outcome.

Department for Exiting the European Union.

The fundamental issue with this letter lies in the words 'desirable outcome'. What if there isn't one? What democratic recourse is there in that case?

I have just had the same response. Basically, 'get lost'. Although I note the gloss that Parliament authorised.. only after you had been taken to court to insist that they did.

I also note the lie about 80% voted for parties which supported Brexit - this is where Labour has to step up.

I wonder if we had a petition to oppose fracking say, would 'the will of the people' be invoked here? Oh no, that would be different.

Let's hope the Independent's petition runs and runs. Yes, the Government ignored the 4 million votes of a previous one, but this was in the hubristic summer of 2016. Now the mood is changing, as people worry especially about getting a supply of medicines.
