Brexit

What if Corbyn wins the GE?😳

Just that. No column inches have been dedicated to considering this possibility (yes, I do know why) but just...what if?

Nothing Carney could say the next morning would be remotely helpful.

UKs and in particular, Londons, overcrowding problems would be solved in days as millions legged it. Horrifying.

What if aliens landed?

It won't happen. Its a Tory Propaganda trick to try and stop people voting Labour or LD and losing their liberal part of their voting core.

I thought JC was confident of getting the keys to Number 10 Smile

If he did get in, it would be great for a few years, then the bills would want paying, been here twice before in my memory, 3 day week anyone? Smile

There is no a chance in hell that will happen.

If he manned up, fast forwarded about 3 decades and acknowledged Brexit then there might be half a chance.

Ironically I'm nearly as annoyed with him for this situation as I am with TM.

Rarely do you get the perfect storm of opportunity in opposition as Corbyn has now and he is completely oblivious to the whole damn thing.

3 day week anyone?

Under Ted Heath, who was a Conservative, in case you have either forgotten, or for those who aren't old enough to have been through it.

Pah! You and your facts, Peregrina! Why can't someone just come on here and present an alternative fact as if it were the truth?

It really is amazing how tribal/blinkered some people are when it comes to attributing certain things too certain parties.

I know, like the fact that more coal mines closed under Labour than under Thatcher.

I think it would be fine if Corbyn got it, things would change and be different but the world wouldn't end. I say this as more of conservative leaning person too.

Ted Health wasn't the PM for the whole of the 1970s during the 3 day week era of which you're talking about. He wasn't a particularly effective leader but neither were Wilson or Callaghan!

Peregrinations, my bad and I stand corrected Smile

Does the Winter of Discontent count under Jim Callaghan?.

I hate auto correct at times

Report
NoMudNoLotus2 · 14/05/2017 19:48

Yes the Winter of Discontent was under Callaghan's government in 78/79

Report
Peregrina · 14/05/2017 19:53

I was around during the Seventies, and did vote then. Heath was PM between 1970 and 1974 which encompassed the three day week, which was predominantly January & February of 1974. He then called an election with the slogan 'Who governs Britain?' With the answer, 'We are not sure, but not you, mate'. Wilson then formed a minority government and called off the 3 day week.

Peregrina · 14/05/2017 19:58

Yes, the Winter of Discontent would count, although my recollection is that it was more patchy and hardly affected some places.
What does that prove? That both Labour and Tory are capable of F* ups. Is that reassuring?

Report
NoMudNoLotus2 · 14/05/2017 20:02

Not really no. The PMs of the 70s were a tragedy in themselves - no strong, clear leaderships, bowing down to the Unions etc. Glad MT had the balls none of them had!

lucydogz · 14/05/2017 20:09

It's not so much JC as PM that worries me, but having Angela Rayner as Education Secretary, Diane Abbot as Home Secretary, and Rebecca Long-Bailey as Business Secretary that worry me. Thank goodness it'll never happen.

Peregrina · 14/05/2017 20:18

Can any of those names be worse than the present incumbents, who seem totally clueless? Amber Rudd - not exactly inspiring as Home Sec. I used to have some regard for Justine Greening, but she's been lumbered with Education, to promote policies that she has no reason to support, having done well out of a Comprehensive system herself.

If it's a choice between JC or TM - I think TM has more of a backbone. You may as well put Homer Simpson in charge of the country if people put JC in power.

The price of bacon will go up, for a start.
All those modifications needed to secure the pig farms when the livestock become airborne.

Plenty of collumn inches have been given to what would happen if Labour won... mainly full of hyperbole like your op; "millions would flee the country". No, they wouldn't. Taxes will not be increased to 90%, No-one is going to start inspecting your hands for callouses, Lenin will not be put on the new banknotes and the sky will not fall in.

This what you're thinking?

What if Corbyn wins the GE?😳
Report
Mistigri · 14/05/2017 23:50

He won't, but tbh, if he did, he'd quite likely do a better job than May, whose only quality - apart from parroting "strong and stable" in response to literally every question she is asked - is that she makes Cameron's premiership seem like a distant, golden age

Report
squishysquirmy · 15/05/2017 00:05

Exactly Mistigri. I'm no Corbynista, but his faults are massively overstated, whilst May's are massively understated. If she is so competent, then why on earth are her campaign managers going to every length possible to hide her away from the general public? She wont even consent to an interview where she might get asked a tricky question, let alone a TV debate, or an interaction with members of the public who aren't carefully selected supporters.

We don't even know what her policies are yet - beyond fox hunting and grammar schools Hmm. Yet we are supposed to assume that they are better than Labour's because she is so trustworthy?
There is nothing about her past record that makes me trust her.
