Eu will be stronger now without us, without our anti EU MEP and without us asking for lots of concessions. It was one of the single most stupid steps to take for our country all cos we don't like forrin and we were manipulated to feel special about being English. Life goes on, we will miss out on so much, it's not just the economy that will take a hit but research, science, technology, quality of life. Do you remember what it was like in the 70s? It will be worse for us. Think no workers rights, no provisioning for protecting the environment. We are already half owned by Quatar and China. We'll have much more of that. Those at the bottom of the ladder today will be joined by those just a couple of steps up to form a new serf class. Those few select at the top will enjoy decadent privileges. Oh well. Yes am sure there will be an EU in some shape or form. Not getting any feel in Italy from people, press or TV that the country is anywhere near thinking of leaving for a start.

But I know that doesnt fit the agenda of Brexit being predicted to cause a domino effect. The Netherlands clearly rejected their best chance of a chance to leave the other week. The chance of Le Pen winning the second ballot are slim and even if she does that still doesnt mean France want to exit the EU. Germany I can't see leaving in a million years. And before anyone said ahhh but noone thought we would leave the EU - I did! No other EU state has been subjected to the 40 years of anti-Europe propaganda, the majority pro Brexit press and the use of the EU as the bogeyman used to excuse so many governmental failures in the way the UK has had so no great surprise at all.

I think the Euro will cause massive problems in the EU over the next decade. I think the economic unbalance it creates will cause the eventual split of the EU. The financial position of many EU banks is very ropey indeed.
In the same way as the majority of the peopke are are relieved we refused to join the Euro we will also be relieved we started to change our relationship with Brexit.
Not joining the Euro was seen as ridiculous and the start of the UK's economic downfall at the time. The reality played out a little differently.

To answer your question OP, I don't think any other countries will want to leave the EU any time soon. What the UK is doing doesn't look clever or desirable at all from the outside. The mood in other countries is different and, as always, misread by the British press.

On the other hand it is looking very likely that the UK will not exist in its current form in 5 or 10 years' time.

It's an interesting question. Some Danish civil servants who I met before the referendum thought that in Denmark a vote on the EU might result in leave winning. They also said " if you're out, we'll be out" but that's just one particular group.

I think that Hungary might get kicked out for being too right wing. I don't see any of the original six having any desire to leave. It must be very frustrating for elderly French people to know that De Gaulle was absolutely right as far as the UK was concerned.

It makes me laugh misti to see how many people who blatantly have no comprehension of the political, social or economic situation in other EU countries bar through the distortion of the anglophone press and social media feel qualified to pass judgement on the direction those countries are likely to take. An example being the way the Netherlands Wilder victory and Nexit was glibly predicted whereas anyone who had just the slightest bit of knowledge re the electoral system there was able to point out why Wilder as pm was highly unlikely to happen. I won't pretend to be an expert in French politics or British politics for that matter but there is support for Le Pen in France and whether or not that emerges as her winning the presidential election or not the support is nonetheless there.

And leaving the EU and returning to the lira would be an utter utter disaster. I love my adopted country Italy but blaming all its problems on the EU without looking at its decades of internal issues politically, without looking at internal corruption etc is ridiculous. Despite being a complete Remainer I have issues with the EU re their response to the migrant crisis and their treatment of Greece amongst other things but to leave on the basis of this is baby and bathwater territory.

In the lead in what opinion poll? You do know that there are two rounds to the election? She could lose the second round (if she gets through the first round, and depending on her opponent) by as much as 24%.

For sure she'd like a Frexit referendum, but she would need France to leave the eurozone first, and she has promised to hold a referendum on that.

Go read some French newspapers. There are very few English language media with good European political coverage; honourable mention to the FT and the english-language version of France 24.

They should read the European press instead of just believing what they're told by DM et al. Don't they know about the deep pride in the European project that most Europeans share?
