What do remainers think of this!

6 MPs, members of the commons select committee, paid a visit to Sports Direct's warehouse in Derbyshire the other day.
It is build in an ex mining area specifically to provide work for a community badly needing employment opportunities.
When the MPs were shown around the warehouse they had the opportunity to speak to many of the employees there. None of them were British all of them were Eastern European. Some didn't even speak English. So could easily be duped into taking reduced wages and a reduction in their employment rights! No unions are allowed there.
The taxi driver who took the MPs there told them there are never any jobs advertised around here from the warehouse and that people from the area would love jobs there - well provided the paid the proper wages and gave full employment rights!

I think it's up to the British government to sort out. Zero hour contracts are banned in many EU countries, in fact this issue has been debated in the European parliament recently and zero hour contracts are probably going to be banned altogether. Workers rights, minimum wage, maternity/paternity leave have all been improved by European regulation, but they cannot intervene in everything and the issues you've mention are the competence of the UK government.

I second what jaws says.

I'd also be interested in seeing a source or two for the statement that 'No unions are allowed there', and another source backing up the taxi driver's assertion that 'there are never any jobs advertised around here from the warehouse and that people from the area would love jobs there - well provided the paid the proper wages and gave full employment rights!'

They don't advertise for jobs locally Wink

This must just be imaginary then - or maybe not enough people turned up....

If Brexit goes ahead, the exploited EU workers will be replaced by grateful local folk who will be given a good wage and good working conditions and excellent employment rights. They'll be transported into the warehouse every morning by unicorns ...

I really think Leavers are running out of arguments, resorting to this kind of "evidence". Which makes Farage's call to arms the more unsettling.

Surely this is at the door of sports direct? Which as we know has a track record of treating its employees terribly.

Is this also the same trip whEre the MP found a secret camera recording them under the sandwiches????

prettybird so, so, what the taxi driver said wasn't correct? I'm so surprised op hasn't provided as source, it's probably from the Express

We all know Sport Direct are appalling, but it turns out now that it's the EU's fault! What's going to happen after brexit? Who'll be to blame for everything?

To answer the OP directly, I think it has fuck all to do with Brexit, actually.

This has nothing to do with Brexit and everything to do with the British government, these are issues that we have control over.

BTW Sports Direct has already been hauled over hot coals in its treatment of workers, some of whom were most definately native speakers of English.

Your claim that jobs were never advertised round there has already been debunked so:

Can you link us to the source?

Other European countries have strong unions - France and Germany for example.

What has your OP got to do with Brexit?

OP, are you there? I'm interested to hear your response so far.

All I can find is about the secret camera under the sandwich tray. Maybe it was planted by spies from Brussels?!

Report
vulpeculaveritas · 08/11/2016 14:03

That's all I can find either.

Even in the information that I can find from the previous scandal I can't find anything that says not one worker is British and that jobs aren't advertised there.

I can tell you thought that a lot of employment was outsourced to an agency.

jaws5 · 08/11/2016 14:09

We've established that the jobs were advertised. Why didn't locals apply, then join a union and fight for their rights? Op, union membership rights cannot be abolished by employers. It's easier not no apply though, and continue blaming foreigners and the EU.

If your issue is that only immigrants from eastern countries will be happy to take jobs like the ones at Sport Direct, then I would say that it is a government issue.
I would lay the blame squarely at DC with zero hour contract, craps wages and no unions even in big companies such as Sports Direct. Because this then
Leads to people refusing to work in such crap conditions.

The only reason companies such as sPorts Direct can carry on exploiting people is because the government is letting them do it.

And yes they will always find people desperate enough to be happy to do it I suspect that thanks to the cit in benefits happening now, we might well find that British people will be happy to do that instead of finding themselves in the street. That doesn't make the way Sports Dorect is treating their employees right

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 08/11/2016 14:27

Er, I think Sports Direct have acted appallingly in a climate in which employers have been allowed to do so. Got fuck all to do with the EU, though.

Report
HummusForBreakfast · 08/11/2016 14:28

Btw, what on earth is the relationship hbetween companies legally employing people from EU conountries and Brexit??

ARe you trying to say that it is awful because British people could have had those jobs? And that's why Brexit is great?

Well.... if you are happy to work in those conditions unlike the other British people who COULD have gone for those jobs but didn't, then yes Brexit is probably a good idea.
Otherwise, I would advise to campaign for fairer working conditions and wages for ALL workers.

Great to hear from the taxi driver on the subject though - I always go to taxi drivers when I want a balanced and reasoned account of any social issue. You know, I used to think the gypsies were fine, and that black people were on balance more likely to experience racism from white people than the other way around: I've certainly had my eyes opened on a few taxi rides, though!

Report
vulpeculaveritas · 08/11/2016 14:32

I think the OP is implying that if there weren't eastern Europeans willing to work in those conditions then Sports Direct would have to improve their pay and conditions.

Funny that in areas of extremely low immigration sports direct and many other firms employ people in exactly the same conditions.

The OP is conflating issues.
