Brexit

Ayone else depressed about "treason" discourse?

First we had this from the Mail and Express:

politicalscrapbook.net/2016/10/mail-and-express-remain-voters-are-unpatriotic-traitors-who-need-to-be-silenced/

Now we have a Conservative councillor starting this petition:

There seems to be a growing narrative that if Brexit is not a howling success it will somehow be the fault of Remain "traitors" who have sabotaged it.
I'm not nervously awaiting a midnight knock on the door. But surely this isn't the sort of discourse we want in our political life?

I am more annoyed that the spokesperson for Theresa May gave this response:

"Different people will choose their words differently. The prime minister is very clear that the British people have made their decision."

The woman is a disgrace.

....so by implication, those that disagree should just shut up? Angry

Doesn't sound like she actually disagreed with what he said. Angry

I agree with peregrina - I wasn't that surprised that some knob-end cane up with such a ridiculous idea, but what shocked and chilled me was the mere shoulder shrug offered by No. 10

Having never heard of the delightful Christian Holliday until today I spent some time perusing his previous tweets this afternoon. He tweeted a gem a few weeks ago about his horror that the BBC had failed to comment on the fact that "Mohammed" was the no. 1 name (only it wasn't). That tweet has now seemingly mysteriously disappeared.

This ^^

Not very hidden subtext: TM and her oh-so-democratic cronies actually agree with the sentiment, so all you dissenters better watch your backs.

Another great day/step towards democracy and freedom of speech... disgraceful

I'm not depressed, the Conservative councillor who started the petition has been suspended today. He & his supporters clearly don't understand the law & look rather foolish. Grin

The proposal to amend the Treason Felony Act 1848 to make dissent against Brexit a treasonable offence is superfluous. Time has moved on & as long as it is peaceful dissent human rights legislation, in particular the right to freedom of expression, trumps over the Treason Felony Act 1848.

Time has moved on... over the Treason Felony Act 1848.

I fear you may have put your finger on exactly the problem that Cllr Holliday and his supporters have tried to remedy by voting to Leave - they don't want time to have moved on and desperately want to take us all back to 1848 Grin.

They also want to get rid of human rights legislation.

Thats correct, the Tories are committed to replacing the UK Human Rights Act with a Bill of Human rights. However Theresa May said wouldn't take us out of the European Convention on Human Rights because there would be no majority in Parliament for leaving it. Art 10 of the Convention guarantees the right to freedom of expression.

The European Counsel that oversees the European Court of Human Rights & the Convention is a completely separate organisation from the EU so when we leave the EU we will still be members of European Council.

I just hope that someone gives Theresa May a history lesson, and tells her exactly why British lawyers were some of the principal architects of the ECHR. To declare that she won't take us out because there would be no majority in Parliament, i.e. she can't get away with it, just shows how low and base her standards are.

unfortunately local councils are the preserve of quite a large number of loons. Just read your Private Eye occasionally. At least this one has been suspended, although I bet he will still claim his allowances.

same as the silly poster whizzing round at the moment listing a lot of things that aren't true and blaming them all on leave voters. The list includes 'interest rates rising', and 'pound at lows not seen since neolithic times'.

twerps and loons on all sides, trying to make a point. Just as well oxygen isn't limited, really.

HPFA

I think that anyone who truly belives that either of thise two stances are reasonable is a complete and utter fuckwit

I am a not particularly forceful remainer. I believe that the country has made a mistake and we are in for a shitty time over the next few years at least. But i tend to be quite polite in my dealings with other people when they either have voted leave or i dont know what they voted

However...anyone who thinks they can silence me on this issue can have another fucking think. I am happy to get very vocal about this as i am not keen on being told what to think or say
