Apparently during the referendum campaign Michael Gove claimed that people who supported the EU were the same as nazi sympathizers during the war.

The first I knew about this was watching Channel4 news last night.

It wasn't "people", it was a group of Nobel prize winning economists, typical of the Leave campaign's hatred of "experts".

He did issue a public apology later after being excoriated for his comments - but he'd already shown his true colours.

Gove didn't compare the EU or a group of experts to Nazi sympathizers.
What he said was you should always be wary of experts. The German's tried to discredit Einstein in the 1930 by getting 100 scientists whom they had employed to discredit his theories.
Nothing to do with Nazis mentioned but maybe not the best analogy to use.

You're right it was Boris Johnson who compared the EU to Nazis not Gove. Gove just compared experts to Nazis

As for the Goviot, my views on that twerp are well known and I have posted a lot here about it (ex teacher). But what he actually said was far more reasoned, as Corcory said. The point was that you don't need a whole host of experts to naysay something - if the thing is wrong a single expert can discredit it!

So yes, he did mention Nazi Germany, but not quite how it has been presented in the OP!

And now I must go and soak myself in Dettol.. I cannot believe I have posted in a manner that is even slightly supporting that twat! I feel immeasurably dirty!

Kaija - Gove did not use the word Nazi he said the German authorities. I am only stating the facts. As I said I don't think he used the best analogy but don't let that get in the way of you being so astonished at me defending him. I wasn't I was putting the facts across not a load of inaccuracies as you did when all you did was read the Telegraph headline and link the article!

But by using the Nazi example he creates the association, he also implies that the experts against brexit were doing so fallaciously and for a darker nefarious purpose.

The one thing we can say is that they were right about the value of the pound and the uncertainty, everything else can't be claimed cause we haven't actually left yet.

Quite frankly its ridiculous, but of course you'd defend him Cocory, anyone who is on your side eh.

I love that Gove got his comeuppance, I don't think he'll get back into any position of power again, he might get a minor cabinet post, but he's poison now.

He's extremely unpopular in the conservative party, especially with the MPs, he'd struggle in any position where he had to get support.

Listen, I've never liked the man. I was simply stating what he actually said and he certainly didn't use the word Nazi. Explaining what the German Authorities did in the 1930s is a long way from 'calling people/experts Nazis'.

When people think of the German authorities in the 1930s they don't think it was the Kaiser, because he'd gone. It equals Nazis as much as Nigel Farage's immigrant poster equals racism, despite the protests that the UKIP manifesto didn't say so in so many words.

Who exactly were the German scientists? It might still be possible to find out whether they were paid up Nazis or sympathisers.

The lse blog also contains a non- fact, unless he has access to the ballot papers and can cross reference them to names and hence ages.

Hard to trust anyone in all this...

Specialsubject, are you talking about the age breakdown of the vote? This has been analysed very comprehensively and uncontroversially in polls and by looking at the population by voting area.

Or did you mean something else?
