Dear xxxxxx

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Invoke Article 50 of The Lisbon Treaty immediately.”.

Government responded:

The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected and delivered. We should not trigger Article 50 until we have a UK approach and objectives.

The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected and delivered. The process for leaving the EU and determining our future relationship will be a complex one, so we need to take time to think through our objectives and approach. We want to ensure the best possible outcome for Britain and the future UK-EU relationship. As part of this, the government will of course work closely with the devolved administrations to ensure we get the best deal for the UK as a whole. We should not trigger Article 50 until we have a UK approach and objectives, so Article 50 should not be invoked before the end of this year.

"The process for leaving the EU and determining our future relationship will be a complex one, so we need to take time to think through our objectives and approach"

Is this the elusive "PLAN"?
Is someone actually going to make one now?
Cool.

That's enough of a response to keep me happy. Smile

Yes, that's what they're counting on.

So...the note says when Article 50 won't be delivered, but not when it will...says it can't happen until there's a plan (that works for Scotland and NI want too) and there is no plan cos they're still thinking one up, but they respect the vote.

Happy days indeed Smile

Is that the actual correspondence?

If so it is atrocious- it's so repetitive.

Report

I think they're simply trying to convey the Brexit team has no "approach and objectives", that they "need to take time to think through our objectives and approach", and "nothing will happen until we have a UK approach and objectives".

Looks like it's official: there was no plan and there still is no plan.
Fiddling whilst Rome burns springs to mind.
Nice one guys

Does this mean they will trigger it before a general election? Isn't own smith promising a second referendum?
I am stunned that the 'no plans for exit' was true! Who doesn't even secretly draw up some plans!?

Report
Lweji · 12/08/2016 15:09

Surely not before a general election. I'm sure they'll leave it for the following government to decide.

This referendum should have had a best before date.

"we need to take time to think through our objectives and approach."

Really? They seriously didn't consider this before holding a referendum

I signed a different petition but also had a reply this morning:

"The British people have voted to leave the European Union and their will must be respected and delivered. Article 50 explicitly recognises that a Member State may decide to withdraw “in accordance with its own constitutional requirements”. It is for the Member State concerned to determine what those constitutional requirements are."

Department for Exiting the European Union

So, it looks as though there is a bit of head scratching going on as to what the Constitutional requirements are.

The problem is that the UK is very unusual in not having a written constitution. I suspect some lawyers will get very rich from this...

....trying to describe the next steps when no one in the Government has a fucking clue is really sure. Confused

Yep - word for word. The only thing I edited out was my name.

The wierdest thing is surely that 100,000 people actually signed a petition to implement A50 immediately (or have I missed something). There clearly are some bloody-minded and foolish people out there.

Report
Lweji · 12/08/2016 17:52

Are you really going to accept this answer?
Why not start another petition to ban replies with vague timings? Or to be told a specific date?

Or even one to “Invoke Article 50 of The Lisbon Treaty immediately and put in place whatever plan you have or forget about the referendum".

God help us! If it takes them that many words to say nothing more than 'we've no fucking idea what we want so can't envoke a50 yet' imagine how long it will take to negotiate the actual exit.

Those would be the people who thought there was a cunning plan in place?

The current plan seems similar to the one in the figure.

Just so long as all the Leave voters are happy, that's the main thing Smile

As to how long negotiating the actual exit would take once "objectives and approach" are agreed, well I guess that will boil down to the highly skilled and motivated team of international trade negotiators who don't exist and probably all voted to Remain even if they did exist so will give zero fucks about enabling it

But meantime we are all fucked by the uncertainty. More depressing stuff in today's FT about how we will lose access to infrastructure loans from the European Investment Bank.

Report
CorkieD · 12/08/2016 20:07

Why on earth does the UK feel the need to draw up draft agreements with the EU before triggering Article 50?

What have trade agreements ever done for us? What has an economy ever done for us? What have jobs ever done for us? We can all try to be self-sufficient instead.

If that doesn't work I'm sure we can easily return to some form of medieval barter system before the two years are up. It certainly worked well in Anglo-Saxon times. Why can't we do it again?

It beggars belief that they didn't have a contingency plan, doesn't it. I guess they just didn't think we'd be stupid enough to vote out.
