Brexit

Who do YOU blame for this?

Do you lay the blame completely with DC for this? Afterall he agreed to the referendum in the first place in order to be re-elected.

Do you blame the people behind the lies of the Brexit campaign? BoJo and Gove et al

Do you blame Corbyn and his lukewarm campaign?

Do you blame the non voters or those who voted and now wish they could change their vote?

Do you blame those who voted leave and still refuse to acknowledge they have been mislead?

Do you blame yourself for not reaching out to more people and making sure they knew how important this vote was and how there was no going back?

Are all of the above to blame to a degree?

I blame David Cameron. He allowed the referendum to save his own skin, failed to put in the safeguards that most referenda include to ensure the result isn't skewed by protest votes, made the referendum a no-going-back procedure, then promptly resigned and left the mess for someone else to sort out.

A weak and unprincipled man. Where is he now? Hiding in the toilets like one of his predecessors famously did?
Never again will the Conservatives be able to boast that the economy is safest with them!

I blame the conservative government who allowed a huge section of our population to become so disenfranchised that they believed the shite that was peddled by right wing arseholes, and for being so arrogant that they never even noticed until it was too late.

I blame both sides of the campaign for running utterly inaccurate campaigns.

I don't think anyone who simply followed the campaigns and used that to decide (rather than doing extra research) would have been able to make a fully informed decision.

The way both sides lied and ramped up the stakes is unforgivable and mostly it was to save or improve their own political careers.

I don't think you can blame one section of society, as much as I don't agree with many people out there, I think lots believed hook, line and sinker what they were fed. Disgraceful

It was absolutely clear what would happen.

All of the above. I lay blame at my own feet for not having spoken up adequately or convincingly about the lies on both sides.

There is no one innocent in this. No one is a winner either. Farage might look like one, short term, but someone with fucked up sensibilities likes his hasn't won at anything. And his arse will be handed to him eventually.

I blame every single person who voted leave without doing their research, who believed the lies, and who used immigration as their reason for voting leave without looking into the facts. I think it will take a long time for my anger at these imbeciles to subside.

I blame successive governments for not doing more to address the very real concerns over what appears to be uncontrolled immigration. Anyone expressing concerns has been shot down as an uneducated racist, and this in turn has allowed Nigel Farage and his ilk to flourish.

How do you know they have been mislead the vote was 2 days ago!!

In answer to your question I don't blame anyone, people are entitled to vote how they like. I'm sorry the vote didn't go the way I wanted, I feel sympathy for the migrants who feel unwelcome, and for people who are worried and who may lose their job. Mostly I think it would be useful if we had some politicans of any party who will come out and reassure the public, Cameron, Osbourne, Gove and Boris are MIA and Labour are imploding.
Too simple to blame the people who didn't vote at all or didn't vote the way you wanted and call them stupid and really doesn't help anyone.

If I have to lay it at someone's door, then I blame David Cameron for initiating the referendum in the first place.

An issue of such massive importance to the long term future of the country should have been decided by the people we had elected to make such decisions on our behalf. It was a reckless gamble on the PM's part to put this question to the electorate.

The gamble didn't go according to plan. Both sides expected Remain to win.

Now that it's all gone horribly wrong, David Cameron has quit and thrown the hot potato in the air. Problem is, nobody wants to catch it!

The UK is in chaos right now! Nobody seems to know what to do.

I blame Cameorn for cynically offering a referendum to appease the far right of his party, and for abrogating his responsibility in a representative democracy.

I agree with sir . This is not the fault of one person, one government, one decision. This is the culmination of successive governments making people (especially younger people) less and less likely to vote, making people not trust in any of our systems, and not addressing people growing concerns surrounding many issues to do with the Eu and immigration.

I'm saddened by the lack of the younger generation that voted.

And for all the nonsense that has happened afterwards, well I blame every individual who has not respected another's decision, who has felt the need to resort to insults and generalisations. And for all those people who have decided to do their eu research after the vote has taken place.

Mislead = NHS figures that have already been confirmed as incorrect. Leave voters must be thinking "fuck if we were mislead about that what else did they lie about" if they have an ounce of sense

This is all at Camerons door.

He gave us the choice of stay or leave which meant the slimy little turd should have had 2 plans in his sweaty little hands, one for stay and one for leave.

It was never up to the campaigners on either side to draw up plans, they were exactly what they said they were, just campaigners spouting the usual crap we put up with at every election.

The arrogant shit didnt expect an exit, had no plan and has now quit and done a runner along with the rest of his team so he doesnt have to face the chaos he has created.

Just going to copy what I wrote on another thread re the NHS £350m, I don't think people were really mislead, maybe they misunderstood;

To be fair I think the point was always that we could spend that on the NHS if we wanted to as we would no longer be sending to EU (so UK could decide rather than EU). However they also said that they would keep all EU funding in place which means half of the £350m which is currently paid back to the UK would still go to those areas.
I voted remain but to be honest I have little sympathy with people who really thought that they were saying they would put £350m per week into the NHS. They aren't the government in any case and I would guess there will be an election in the next 6 months so people can vote on what kind of exit they want and what they want the money to be spent on (Cons & Lab) or even if they want to reverse the ref decision (Lib Dems).

The Vote leave leaflet actually said

The EU costs us £350m a week. That's enough to build a new NHS hospital every week of the year. We get less than half of this money back and we have no control over the way it's spent - that's decided by politicians and officials in Brussels, rather than the people we elect here.

I understand it is nuanced and it was there in black and white.

Crunchymum · 26/06/2016 17:23

Hadn't actually read it from the leaflet (I was always remain so never particular read the leave manifesto), have just heard it being bandied about so should have checked it!! On that score I am completely wrong.

Yes to both. I also blame Corbyn for general uselessness and BoJo for not thinking through what would happen next.

I blame the adversarial political system.

A referendum on a subject of this gravity should have been put to the people (if at all) in factual terms. I have no problem with the idea of people having a different view of the facts from mine, but before we can establish that we need to have some consensus in place as to what the facts are. What was needed was a cross-party or perhaps even completely politically independent committee to draft a summary of the current relationship between the UK and the EU, and outlining a possible vision of what might replace it, instead of a personality-led competition to convince the electorate of disputed sets of information and vague, misspoken promises.

Both Leave and Remain are guilty of having presented things in terms of their interpretation of the facts, and their opinions of those interpretations. This would be problematic in itself, insofar as public response was therefore to the campaign participants rather than to the facts they were interpreting and opining over, but since most of what the Leave campaign comprised has now transpired to be completely untrue, the referendum result is farcically undemocratic and should be disregarded, imo.

I also blame almost everyone else who's been mentioned above! i.e. Cameron for being so self-interested as to promise a referendum in order to de-fang UKIP at the last GE, and for being so hubristic as to go ahead with it even after the February negotiations; BJ for being so amorally politically ambitious on his own account; every Tory MP who cheated on their expenses at the last GE, thus providing the Tories with the majority that enabled DC to call this referendum; the coalition Libdems whose treachery gave the Tories extra seats at the last GE; successive Conservative governments for driving the poor and the vulnerable into a corner in which xenophobia has been able to flourish; the Labour in-fighters who have undermined their own opportunities to form meaningful opposition; Nigel Farage for being a self-obsessed megalomaniac; and the right-wing press, who take no responsibility for the real-world fall-out that ensues from their cynical pursuit of gasp-inducing hatred and outrage.

I also blame every voter who put the imagined safeguarding of their own 'prosperity' ahead of the needs of desperate people from other parts of the planet, who, for reasons of warfare, climate change, post-colonial instability or just a desire to put food in their children's stomachs, are obliged to look elsewhere in the world for a home than the particular place they happened to be born. Let's enjoy hashtagging our woes as #firstworldproblems while we still can. And I hope none of those voters are ever going to embarrass themselves by wishing or praying for world peace.
