Brexit

It isn't about making Britain 'Great' again (whatever the help that means)

At a time when terrorists blow other people up in the name of religion and race (or any other equally stupid reason) we should be looking to strengthen our relationships with other countries.

Instead just short of half the UK seem to be hell bent on isolating ourselves on our little island, insisting that we don't need else.

Today the internet is full of pictures and posts claiming that leaving the EU will make Britain 'Great' again.

What the hell does that even mean?

To me it snacks of the backwards era of empires; when slavery was the norm, wars were fought to gain power and the policy was 'Make the world England.'

AIBU?

I asked one for their policy ideas to make us 'great' again...they basically said I just hope for it.

Yes it is an idiotic, vacuous statement - just meaningless rhetoric.

Was going to start a thread on this! Seen lots of people saying this.

It has very alarming connotations to me, smacks of the Third Reich and "fatherland" type attitudes.

What do they mean by it?

Do they want to revert to the days when we were "great" because we were at the head of a vast empire, gained through violence and oppression?

Or do they "just" want to rid the country of immigrants in some huge purge???

the least alarming implication is that they are just profoundly naive and misunderstand global geo-politics.

Well I just threw my hands up when there was a box pop on TV and the immortal line was uttered "yeh, Im voting leave. Britain, well we built the world didn't we...'

Do much for British education then.

It's frightening. I remember having that kind of idea of Britain as a small child, before I read more, travelled more and gained perspective!!! We aren't a global super power. Yet so many people think that we "ought" to be.

It's not just for our benefit against war and terrorism we should stick together though is it. I don't understand why we want to punish and hate so many people just because they were born in a country of war and poverty. And we seem to think we are so entitled to everything just because we weren't.

I really thought we were better than this but I was wrong.

Hate that phrase. Great Britain is the largest island of the British Isles, it esentiallly means Big Britain. It puts my teeth on edge.

Well the idea of a United Kingdom is completely buggered now...

Well quite mavis. Think the next Scottish referendum will put an end to the "Great Britain" rhetoric
(Or at least I hope it does, because I am concerned about the more sinister implications of this kind of isolationist nationalism)

I saw that too, ironic that this is probably the beginning of the end for Britain. That the Great bit means size rather than ability and without Scotland "Great Britain" will cease to exist.

The "make Britain Great again" bullshit has been setting my teeth on edge all day; I'm so glad I'm not alone Grin

What's going to make it Great, then? Scotland leaving? The pound crashing? Almost half of the population wanting to abandon ship right now? The country split into two factions who will never see eye to eye in the same way again? A lumbering shaggy-haired spunktrumpet as a prime minister?

I think what a lot of them mean by "Great" is actually "white" sadly

I blame thar idiotic "Great" campaign, it gave people the wrong meaning. Art is Great (Britain), Shopping is Great (Britain) and now the latest addition Ignorance is Great (Britain)..congrats!

Exactly, nothing that happens next will make Britain 'great' or even vaguely acceptable. At best it will be the 'Sort of United Kingdom of England and Wales'.

DH and I are so angry we are sat here shouting at the news; people just spewing vile racist hatred and vitriol.

FGS, the 'Great' in Great Britain does not mean 'great' in the sense of 'fantastic'.
Compare 'Greater London'. It just means larger, more extensive, not just the more central areas.
I don't know, but I would guess that the term came into use after Scotland joined the Union.

God the interviews of people in the Black Country & other areas were ridiculous.

"BEST DAY OF MOI LOIFE" and lots of blithering about "no more syrian immigrants".

They're not doing a great job of portraying the Leave campaigners as anything other than illiterate racist inbreds.

Getting like mother Yes you are right

The island with England, Wales and Scotland is called Great Britain. England and Wales are just Britain so leaving the EU will have the opposite effect. If Scotland leaves the UK it will take the Great out of Great Britain
