Today in the BBC - Diesel cars that have been encouraged and enforced by the EU are even more poisonous than we thought:
“Testing company Emissions Analytics told the BBC it has measured a significant rise in poisonous gas emissions from a wide range of models as the temperature drops. It found the problem is worst among the Euro 5 category of cars, which became mandatory in 2011.”
Why does it matter?
Pollution has been linked to heart attacks, strokes, breathing problems and premature babies. There is a suggestion that children going to school near busy roads may develop smaller lungs.
Professor Frank Kelly at King's College London:
"On average we think pollution is probably taking away about six months of life for the average British citizen," he says

Why is the EU to blame?
Baroness Jenny Jones of the Green Party “The EU is at the mercy of big corporates and private interest groups. For example, look at the influence over many years of the car industry in pushing diesel, which has helped to poison the air in many of our towns and cities.”
