This can't be good for us.

Cadbury moved factory to Poland 2011 with EU grant.
Ford Transit moved to Turkey 2013 with EU grant.
Jaguar Land Rover has recently agreed to build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata,
Peugeot closed its Ryton (was Rootes Group) plant and moved production to Slovakia with EU grant.
British Army's new Ajax fighting vehicles to be built in SPAIN using SWEDISH steel at the request of the EU to support jobs in Spain with EU grant, rather than Wales.
Dyson gone to Malaysia, with an EU loan.
Crown Closures, Bournemouth (Was METAL BOX), gone to Poland with EU grant, once employed 1,200.
M&S manufacturing gone to far east with EU loan.
Hornby models gone. In fact all toys and models now gone from UK along with the patents all with with EU grants.
Gillette gone to eastern Europe with EU grant.
Texas Instruments Greenock gone to Germany with EU grant.
Indesit at Bodelwyddan Wales gone with EU grant.
Sekisui Alveo said production at its Merthyr Tydfil Industrial Park foam plant will relocate production to Roermond in the Netherlands, with EU funding.
Hoover Merthyr factory moved out of UK to Czech Republic and the Far East by Italian company Candy with EU backing.
ICI integration into Holland’s AkzoNobel with EU bank loan and within days of the merger, several factories in the UK, were closed, eliminating 3,500 jobs
Boots sold to Italians Stefano Pessina who have based their HQ in Switzerland to avoid tax to the tune of £80 million a year, using an EU loan for the purchase.
JDS Uniphase run by two Dutch men, bought up companies in the UK with £20 million in EU 'regeneration' grants, created a pollution nightmare and just closed it all down leaving 1,200 out of work and an environmental clean-up paid for by the UK tax-payer. They also raided the pension fund and drained it dry.
UK airports are owned by a Spanish company.
Scottish Power is owned by a Spanish company.
Most London buses are run by Spanish and German companies.
The Hinkley Point C nuclear power station to be built by French company EDF, part owned by the French government, using cheap Chinese steel that has catastrophically failed in other nuclear installations. Now EDF say the costs will be double or more and it will be very late even if it does come online.
Swindon was once our producer of rail locomotives and rolling stock. Not any more, it's Bombardier in Derby and due to their losses in the aviation market, that could see the end of the British railways manufacturing altogether even though Bombardier had EU grants to keep Derby going which they diverted to their loss-making aviation side in Canada.
39% of British invention patents have been passed to foreign companies, many of them in the EU
The Mini cars that Cameron stood in front of as an example of British engineering, are built by BMW mostly in Holland and Austria. His campaign bus was made in Germany even though we have Plaxton, Optare, Bluebird, Dennis etc., in the UK. The bicycle for the Greens was made in the far east, not by Raleigh UK but then they are probably going to move to the Netherlands too as they have said recently.

Has anything been moved here. Is it counterbalanced?

That's the thing... No not that I can find, other than a few small businesses that do not produce the revenue like the ones that have gone

You can add to the list all of the companies which operate out of Ireland or Luxembourg in order to avoid our taxes. These are giants like Amazon, Apple and Ebay and have avoided paying us tens of billions in tax as a result.

Brexit would sort them out nicely. :)

But those grants and loans would exist even if we were outside of Europe and we couldn't prevent the EU making offers to private companies either way.

I can't see how this is an in/out issue Confused

Businesses in the UK have invested in Europe, and European companies have invested here.

That is the entire point of the EU. It makes us collectively better off. It's created hundreds of thousands more jobs in the UK alone.

It does not follow - at all - that this would somehow be improved for Britain if we were to leave Europe. Indeed, it's far more likely that businesses would move more operations to Europe, so they can trade more easily there. Leave means job losses here. Most likely a lot of them.

How about all the thousands of jobs lost from the companies on the list?

But it's like going into someone's house and cherry picking their best possessions and taking them away with you.

Surely there have been thousands and thousands of jobs lost through this?

Presumably if we were outside the EU it would have to pay an awful lot more. This seems more like moving across rather than buying out.

The EU is a job destroying machine for a number of reasons, always has been.

For instance VAT is a European tax and some of it goes directly to Brussels. They insist on VAT being added to all fuels and energy, which prices heavy industry out of the UK.

But yeah, so many jobs lost through the EU offering grants for companies to relocate. Those same companies would probably have to come back if we vote for Brexit.

I notice the OP doesn't mention the large manufacturers who have chosen to locate themselves in the UK because it gives them ready access to the EU market, like Toyota.

I can't be bothered to check the whole list, but just sticking to the car companies on the list, Jaguar Land Rover is an Indian company, Peugeot is French , and Ford is of course American. Britain does not have a car industry except insofar as it plays host to the manufacturing plants of non-British companies because it is part of the EU. There are some British owned companies supplying parts to the car industry, but some of these will move their plants to the EU in the event of a full brexit.

MrsBlackthorn · 22/06/2016 09:10

Why would they come back? Weakened sterling, trade barriers, volatile economy, challenging recruitment market - that gives companies more reason to LEAVE the UK, not invest here.

The tens millions of jobs that have been created across the EU as a result of increased prosperity really do not back up that assertion.

Why all the high levels of mass unemployment then in Greece, Spain, Portugal?

Report

Those things are not good.

They have been supported by successive UK governments for years.

The UK is one of the least protected economies in the EU.

Because that what our governments have chosen for us.

If you don't want jobs moved out of the UK, then you should not vote for Tory Brexit.

The Euro is a job destroying machine. If this were a referendum on the Euro voting out would be a good idea. But it's not.

Increased prosperity where exactly?

Last time I looked the Eurozone had been in meltdown for almost a decade.

If the EU has created jobs here then they are minimum wage and zero hour contract ones.

If we vote leave the list of companies moving abroad will keep growing as they will move to continental Europe to keep their businesses EU based and reduce costs. Ford have a plan to do this if we vote Brexit and I'm sure that others do too. It will be s very different place for jobs in 5 years time and not in a good way Sad

Has anyone got a comprehensive list if the business moving to Britain or even a list of investment in UK busineas just to see if anything counterbalances?

I have been saying for years this country is up shit creek.

What grest things does Britain produce today?

What does Britain manufacture?

All I see is property. It's property property property. Lots being built but being sold to overseas buyers. Our housing shortage is never being resolved.

A lot of that could have been avoided by not voting Tory/Nu-Labour tbh.

All the sell offs are our crappy governments faults, in general elections I dont think anyone voted to sell everything off, but they did.

That IOW wind manufacturing plant went bust under labour but has recently come back, but again by tories stopping funding into green energy this doesn't help our local market.

Not being in control of energy security within our country is a disgrace tbh -

Again will try and fail to vote out tories in my tory stronghold.

Totally.

So kuch of the misunderstanding of the EU and what it does/can do and the UK's power within it is a result of 30 odd years of cynical pretence by UK governments that they were being forced to do things by the EU that they were doing as a matter of their own policy.

All I keep seeing is people saying millions of jobs will go if we leave, or food will go up. Petrol go up. Where are the facts, treasury is basically Osborne, Bank of England is pretty much Osborne and CBI is Cameron, they are not impartial

Nothing concrete I live near clacton not in clacton. There is a huge farming community around farmers were rallying in the pub the other week wanting to leave EU,
