I use citric acid, vinegar and baking soda in the loo but in order to clean it properly, I need to be able to reach behind the bottom of the loo. I guess leaving regular bleach/ toilet cleaner in the water avoids this but as I dont use these.. a quick scrub is required.... any pointers?

What do you mean by 'clean it properly'? Does it have limescale or have you been duped by a lifetime's worth of toilet cleaner adverts into believing that you need to nuke everything between the toilet rim and the sewer?

Nope... I have never used bleach or toilet cleaner but if I manage to remove any residue including limescale, the toilet smells cleaner. I can do that by scrubbing but I know that there are parts that I cannot reach which are between the bottom of the toilet that I can see and where the water goes round the second bend.

Not sure if you will like it but I recently bought a Joseph Joseph toilet brush. It is a different design. It won’t go as far as the second bend but certainly cleans the toilet and the brush is clean with one flush because of the design not like those close bristle ones that harbour everything. I bought it from Lakeland. It isn’t quite as bendy/ flexible but that maybe because it is new but it does do the job. I do check the loo every day.

Rubber gloves and a bathroom use only scourer. At the end of the day it's not a job that needs doing more than once a month and if you and your partner take turns it's only once every couple of months.
Yep it's not great fun but necessary.

Also it don't be smelling if it's trapped under water that's the whole point of how toilets are designed. It's more likely to be limescale build up right up under the rim....again a rubber glove and scourer job.

I bought an Enjo toilet brush pad and stick. It's great at cleaning above and below the rim. Toss the pad in the washing machine and it's good to go for the next clean. I also make toilet fizzies with citric acid and baking soda, with eucalyptus essential oil. Don't bother with fancy post poo drops, again just a bottle of eucalyptus essential oil. A few drops left in the bowl post flush and the entire bathroom smells fresh and clean. I also pop a few drops down the sink after washing my hands.
