Toilet cleaning wipes

I like to think I'm pretty good at environmental stuff, reuse and recycle where I can, vegetarian, eco cleaning products at home, but one thing I don't know what to do is toilet cleaning wipes. I know they are terrible for the environment but not sure how else to clean the seat, lid and outside surfaces of the toilet? What do other people do?

Cloth then hot wash. I did originally think it was urgh but I got over it and no one has died.

Use a normal cloth and then wash it .

We have white cotton cloths, they clean the whole bathroom ending with the loo. They then get rinsed, left in a weak bleach solution and dried. Washed at the end of the week with all the rest of the white cloths. It works really well.

I do a compromise and use Ecover or Method cleaning spray and wipe off with a couple of sheets of economy recycled kitchen paper.

Please don't use bleach for anything. It's not necessary!

I use toilet roll (I know it's not great, but it is the recycled stuff). Then flush it.

I’m similar in terms of general approach and wondered the same.

Then I realised that there was a time before wipes, people used cloths and washed them. And they were fine!

I’m planning to buy different coloured ones for toilets, but not sure what to wash them with... does it matter as it all gets clean? On 60?

Interested to hear others views.

Cloths obviously!

Have coloured coded cloths for each section of the house, say purple cloths for toilet cleaning duties, so you won't be worried you'll accidentally use the toilet cloth to clean kitchen surfaces.

Then chuck all cleaning cloths in a boil wash.

Yes good point, micro cloths or whatever the hell they're called to clean thw bathroom with toilet as last thing. Dishcloths for kitchen!

I think standards have slipped but I just don't stress about that stuff any more. As long as I'm not washing dishes with it, they're all interchangeable really

cloths and a bucket of warm soapy water.
the bathroom is cleaned with that top to bottom with the toilet last.

Sorry to be an eco bore, but if possible aim for cotton cloths.

I used cotton cloths and stardrops - the one with ammonia. Does anyone know if ammonia is better or worse than bleach for the environment?

I hate bleach. Smells vile. I won't have it in the house, but DH keeps sneaking it in to put down the drain.

I don't like the smell either thenightskybut half a teaspoon in a plastic tub topped up with water is not too bad, it then goes down the sink at the end of the day.

Genuine question - for the cloths do you all have lots of them? I ask because I only clean my bathroom a couple of times a week and although I use cloths elsewhere in the house I am not a cleaning fiend...I would only need to wash maybe 4clothes a week? I don't want to put a whole hot wash on my washing machine for only a few cloths? Seems counter productive? In fact i never hot wash anything to be honest, I wash towels on 50degrees but everything else is 40 or 30?

Would chucking them in a bucket with a little bleach and boiling water do the job?

I have lots of cloths.
many flannels that got a bit frayed and cut up old jeans

cleaning cloths and tea towels go in the same (hot wash) with just a little soda crystals.

I have about 8 cloths, as they have been rinsed and bleached I wash at 40 at a weekend with the white school tops. Need a few more though just looking out for nice affordable cotton ones so they can go in a hot wash if needed.

Ok, I have ordered some cotton clothes. I think if I'm going to completely ditch all forms of wet wipe then I will need to go all out in order to have something to wash. They are colour coded too. Good idea about putting them on with school things. My daughter starts school in September so I will have more whites to wash then!

Brilliant, thanks guys, I have a load of old cloths so will start using them with hot soapy water. Good for cleaning the bathroom floor too 😊

I think I must be a filther - cloths are cut up old clothes and chucked in with rest of the washing. I don't keep cloths separate for kitchen and bathroom (I mean after they've been in the wash). My Mum is even worse than me though and I spent my childhood dusting with her old knickers.
