Real Xmas Trees in pots - experiences please

My daughter is desperate for a real Xmas tree despite us having inherited a gorgeous artificial one. I am reluctant because of the thought of spending all that dosh to just throw it out after a fortnight so am thinking of getting one grown in a pot so we can move it in and out each year and it doesn't just die. Has anyone done this and do they last?

Last time i had one our pet gerbil escaped and hid in it so they attract wildlife.

Nice smell though and i do mean the tree.
